I've ran a computer before with the case off and parts of the computer laying on a desk. You really should be safe as long as you don't bring an outside electrical charge anywhere near the hard drive. Rubbing your socks on the floor and then touching a hard drive, for example, wouldn't be pretty.
But yeah, if your computer were to say unexpectedly fall and that loose harddrive were to bang against the motherboard, you'll quickly see smoke.

I've noticed that my audio no longer works. I tried using 2 different sets of speakers and headphones. Nothing works. My audio out is part of the motherboard. If my computer (and therefore motherboard) is working, shouldn't the audio work? Any ideas?

is this audio from the cd player, or audio from the computer itself?

No audio plays. I tried the normal audio out jack in the back, headphone jack in the front, and headphone jack on the DVD drives. I also tried playing CDs in the drive - no sound, I tried playing audio files from my HD - no sound.

ok, check to see if the sound cable is in your sound card. this is a thin wire and will look like this
this has to be plugged in on both ends for the cd player to be able to play music
also jingle around your sound card and make sure it didnt come loose

I tested and now, just retested the snugness of all connections inside my PC. All are in nice and tight. I do not have a sound card in my PC. The sound card is integrated into the motherboard. I tried Troubleshooting through XP and it downloaded some additional drivers but still no luck.

hmmm integrated sound cards suck, cause if they go, then you either have to get a new motherboard or a new soundcard
make sure the HD dangling isnt resting on the motherboard. thats about all i can think of right now

The new HD is now fastened near the other drives, away from the Motherboard. Well, I guess I now know that I am in the market for a sound card. Thanks for your help.
