So, I bought Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy on DVD today. I loved this movie. A lot. I still think it's the single funniest movie I've ever seen.
Anyway, I got the "limited edition gift set" or whatever the fuck it's called. And it's got an additional DVD included which contains an entire additional movie, called "Wake Up Ron Burgundy".
From what I understand, it's pieced together from alternate and excluded scenes from the original film. But they must have had a ton of extra stuff, because it's an entirely new storyline, involving a group of bank robbers. It's almost as if they filmed the key, plot-driving scenes for two movies and just chose the better of the two stories to edit into Anchorman. How they have two completely separate storylines filmed for one movie is beyond me.
A lot of the scenes (especially the early ones) are very obviously just alternate versions. Supposedly, this takes place after Anchorman, when Ron and Veronica are dating and he's come to terms with her being his co-anchor, yet the same sexism issue is at the center of this movie. It almost would have made more sense if they were to say that this is simply an alternate universe, with the same ideas (and jokes), but different details.
So, you have to take it with a grain of salt, given the nature of the source material. That said, it was fucking hilarious. There were a lot of really, really funny jokes--quite a few new (such as the news team's getting lost in the mountains and resorting to cannibalism, despite signs for Burger King and 7-11 being visible behind Ron) and many carried over from the first movie and just elaborated upon (such as Champ's love for Ron and Harkin's rebellious teenage son). Honestly, I found a lot of this stuff so funny and original and worthwhile that I don't see why they didn't simply shoot some new scenes--they'd need maybe 45-minute's worth, probably less--to plug in and release this as a feature film.
Also, the Wake Up, Ron Burgundy DVD has what is supposed to be a voiceover commentary introduction by Will Ferrell and "third exec producer" Aaron Zimmerman. I thought it was going to give a little insight into why the hell all this extra material was filmed and post-produced. As it turns out, it's a fifteen-minute long joke, wherein Will slowly realizes that "Aaron Zimmerman"--who he's never met or heard of previously--isn't a producer at all, but a jobless loser who just hangs around movie sets and yells a lot. It's so funny.
The main DVD also has a ton of extras, plus I got an additional third disc that's apparently only avilable if you buy the gift set from Best Buy, featuring thirty additional minutes of extra features. This set is a comedy gold mine!
So, yeah. I loved it. I know a lot of people didn't even like Anchorman and those people would absolutely loathe Wake Up, Ron Burgundy and should quietly exit my thread now. But for anybody who did like Anchorman, you should most definitely check this out.

I have $95 worth of gift cards for BB, so I think this is going to have to be on the list. I have told my wife countless times over the past few months that I was going to punch her in the ovaries.

You make it sound like it's no big deal to shoot 45 minutes of a movie...let alone an alternate version of an already existing flick.
How dare you.

Well, as opposed to shooting ninety minutes of a movie. It's half the work.

Well yeah, and walking half of 800 miles is still 400 miles of walkin'.

I would never walk 400 miles, Jeff. I would buy a scooter. Or a caribou. Or something.
