I had never heard him at all. i checked out that Movie: The Devil And Daniel Johnston. i don't know if its the same one. But, I have had his songs stuck in my head every since. My favorite part is when he is singing a song about a funeral and a casket and has the audience singing. And he trips acid with Gibby Haynes!

When you consider that the people who listen to Daniel Johnston do so mostly out of pity, or because they're so fascinated by freakshows and then your people who "relate" to him, you're talking about possibly the worst audience for a musician ever.

Daniel Johnston is one of the best songwriters in this world. I am a real fan, not out of pity. Although ofcourse I feel sorry he's so sick right now, and I hope he'll survive!
I've only seen him live once, and that was the most emotional concert in my life: I just couldn't stop crying.
I'll post some more links here in my lunch break.
groetjes,
Mirella

daniel johnston is probably the most important songwriter fromt he last 20 years. he's such an udnerrated genius.
that documentary is really touching. i made a thread about it but it was obviously ignored.. what can i expect from people who only listen to pearl jam, audioslave, bob dylan and radiohead? bahhh.

How is Daniel Johnston underrated?
Most people don't know him.
Also, what you wrote isn't that respectful: 'freak show', 'pity', 'bad audience'... and far from the truth.

m ward's version of "to go home" on post war is sweet and bright eyes cover of "devil town" is also key
i love the documentary, but i don't think daniel johnston is as great as they make him out to be much like the dig effect with brian jonestown massacre. both are good and prolific, but i think the story is bigger than the music.

Saw the Devil And Daniel Johnston the other night and was blown away. I can see why people say negative things about him, but I don't feel that way. I am just completely awestruck at how someone who is so clearly unstable and 'out there' can so easily write songs that cut very deep. I've been a Pink Floyd fan for over half my life, and Syd Barrett's songs have never grabbed me lyrically the way Daniel Johnston's has. The guy really is something else.

Still, if he released something with some decent production values, the tunes might shine a bit more. People into Albini/indie production probably hear a lot more in him than I do.

i'm a huge albini fan... he never hides things in the mix. he's really good at exposing what's truthfully there. i don't mind the lo-fi.

I love it. I mean, just an ugly man with a simple guitar or an organ and no special voice who can make people cry or totally rock out; beautiful!
