It has to be Matt or Jeff. Mike is a very good guitarrist but he doesnt do anything really special while Jeff nails the fretless, upright and 12-string. Matt has some jazz background and can do those weird tempos.

At 1st glance, Mike wins, but when you hear Breath and also see Jeff playing all those cool lines on a fretless bass, you have to admit that Jeff has some unique skills. And he is also rock-solid, rarely miss a note compared to Stone or Mike.

I just look at who's best in the live performance.

I don't play an instrument so I'm not sure who to pick. I enjoy mike the most live but also gets the flashiest parts.
I think we can all agree that the answer is not Ed

I would have to fully agree with this, you nailed it, it is a real toss up tho....
on a sidenote i think that Ed is the inspiration and driving creative force in the band and it's hard to argue with that even tho he isn't the greatest guitar player or whatever
"the most skilled" is quite a broad generalization.

Definitely, they're each skilled in their own way.
Stip, I know you said we could agree that it's not Ed, but if anyone wants to argue the point, try playing and singing some of his stuff, especially some of the faster ones - MFC, Insignificance and Sad would be tricky to sing and play at the same time.

fair enough--but eddie also misses notes all the time let alone what he does to lyrics. eddie is my favorite writer in the band (obviously lyrics but often the music too) and I usually love the songs he comes up with but if we're just talking about live stuff he can't always pull it off.

Mike is an above average guitarist compared to most other band's guitarists. But Stone is just as good if not better. Eddie makes it all happen but isn't consistent at all, which brings his rep down a bit. Matt enjoys playing his instrument the most IMO, which heightens his rep. But Jeff just has the overall best talent.

I dunno, mike looks like he's climaxing sometimes
