Are any of us in that 14%? =)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6062980.stm

US shows signs of net addiction

14% of respondents said they cannot stay away from the internet
More than one in eight adults in the US show signs of being addicted to the internet, a study has shown. "Addicts" showed signs of compulsive internet use, habitually checking e-mail, websites and chat rooms.

....and this is supposed to have a negative impact on America? Face it, the internet has changed and revolutionized our lives in every aspect for the better. This is not an addiction like drugs, porn, and gambling.

The internet for me is just another form of entertainment, much like TV.

My amount of internet usage is directly proportionate to how bored i am.

I don't know about bad for America, but it can definitely be bad for the individual. While not as destructive as the hard addictions, ie drugs and alcohol, soft addictions like the internet can have a negative affect on people's lives. Any compulsive behavior that is somehow being used as a coping mechanism is unhealthy.

I would definitely disagree that the internet has made every aspect of our lives better. There are plenty of negative consequences. Children being exposed to pornography and predators, reduced worker productivity, identity theft and fraud, etc...

If anything I'd say the internet intensifies anyones addiction to porn and gambling.

 There are plenty of folks who beat 20,000 if you add up their posts on RM, GTW, MP, and the Fuge. The exodus to the Fuge is how I ended up on top of this stupid dogpile.

I can see the internet as being "addicting" or "harmful" if it becomes a replacement for real-life interaction. Once a person spends his or her time in chat rooms rather than going out and interacting with people, then it becomes a problem. But I wouldn't equate it with alcoholism or a drug problem. The internet is a lot of great things (it can bring together a diverse group of people) but there are the negatives.

ya im probably addicted to the internet. but not like those damn world of warcraft people. the way I see it, being on a message board like this is like having a pot or small drinking habit, that kinda video game-where you can never stop playing- kinda stuff is like crack.

I think I am. Kind of. I'm work on the internet and I also go there for fun, so I spend a lot of my day on it (which can be like from 7 AM to 2 AM when my gf's not there). And when I can't connect, well it pisses me off big time, even if I don't have anything important to do. Fortunately I also do real things in real life with real people
