Move to Iran, mufti told
October 26, 2006 11:15am
Article from: AAP
AUSTRALIA'S mufti should resign and move to Iran after publicly saying women who do not wear the hijab invite sexual assault, a Liberal MP said today.
Sheik Taj al-Din al-Hilali used a Ramadan speech in Sydney to blame women who don't wear the hijab (Islamic headdress) for being preyed on by men.
"If you take uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the garden or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it ... whose fault is it, the cats or the uncovered meat?," The Australian quoted him as saying.
The comments come after several young men were jailed for a string of notorious gang rapes in Sydney, although the sheik did not refer specifically to the crimes.
Victorian Liberal MP Sophie Mirabella today said the mufti had highlighted a gulf between Islamic law and women's rights, and called on him to resign or be sacked.
"Every Australian woman should feel disgusted by Hilali's comments and he should either stand down or be sacked for these outrageous statements," she said.
"These comments ... clearly show that there is a huge disconnect between the rights of women and the laws of Islam.
"People accused of rape will now be able to quote this bloke in court in their support. He has incited young Muslim men to believe that violence against women is acceptable."
Mrs Mirabella urged the sheik to consider moving to Iran.
"I have a message for Sheik Alhilali: This is Australia, not Iran, and violence and degradation of women is not acceptable," she said.
"If he wants to sprout this type of offensive discourse, perhaps he should be making these comments in an Islamic state - something that Australia never has (been) and never will be."
She called on members of the prime minister's Muslim advisory board to condemn his comments.

I read that in the mx today (great source of daily news )
I've also heard similar feelings from rapists of South America, altough without the mulism connections. It appears in these areas (south america and middle east) that rape isn't treated anywhere near as seriously.
Is it ironic that he compared woman with pieces of meat and his views almost implied they were?

Though the source is suspect, I read that in some areas of South America a rapist is forgiven by the courts if he asks the victim to marry him.
What exactly is wrong with the boldened part of what the man said?
Honestly, I think it's frank honesty. Furthermore, it's not even close to an indictment of women. It's an indictment of men. Saying, "Women who dress like whores invites rape" is not bad. Nor is it wrong. Who gets raped in this world? Stupid naive college girls who whore themselves out and end up getting date raped at parties? Or, conservative muslim girls who wear hijabs?
Let's go further. How's he belong in Iran? Did he say, "I'm gonna take control, and impose my beliefs upon you. All women WILL completely cover themselves because Allah says it so." No. No he didn't. All he did was say, "women should cover themselves up, because dressing indecent may lead to negative consequences as opposed to covering yourself up." Makes sense.
Think about your own daughters, whether they exist now, or will in the future. How do you want them to dress? Are you going to let them trapse around all over the place like whores? I know I won't.
Let's go further. Unwanted attention. It's pretty vague right there. But I'll say this. When girls dress like that, it brings about unwanted attention.
The hijab is worn for a reason. And it's damn good reasons. Why on EARTH would a girl dress like a whore? Scantily if you will. It's simply to focus attention on herself, and let's be brutally honest. There are time where it certainly will draw attention of a negative form upon young women.
What about school? Why do we have dress codes in school? Why can't that be applied via society, upon society?
Ugh. I hate to say I agree with a hardline Muslim, but I pretty much agree. Furthermore, further research finds me this:
Mufti 'taken out of context' October 26, 2006 COMMENTS by Australia's mufti in which he said women who dressed provocatively brought unwanted attention were taken out of context, his associate said today.
Sheik Taj al-Din al-Hilali used a Ramadan speech in Sydney to blame women who didn't wear Islamic headdress for being preyed on by men.
"If you take uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the garden or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it ... whose fault is it, the cats or the uncovered meat?" he was quoted by The Australian as saying.
Keysar Trad, the mufti's associate, today said the sheik had been talking about abstinence, fidelity and dress codes, but not rape.
"He wasn't talking about the hijab. He was talking about people who engage in extramarital sex," Mr Trad said on ABC radio.
"He's always encouraged fidelity and abstinence until people get married.
"He's talking about those people who prey on others - whether men or women - who seek to engage in sexual conduct outside of marriage and do so through alluring types of attire."
Asked to verify that the sheik had referred to women who don't wear the hijab as "uncovered meat", Mr Trad said: "From my discussions with him, the issue was not whether they wear a hijab or don't wear a hijab.
"The issue is that every society has a certain dress code, a normal dress code that people go by. "So if somebody goes beyond that dress code, if men or women get to the stage where they dress in a manner that is provocative then these people are doing something wrong.

Yeah i heard that from the doco i watch, so it ends up with stand over tactics on the family to force the rapee to marry

what exactly does it mean to "dress like a whore"?

Oh, ya know, the typical whore look. Real short shorts, perhaps some butt cheek hanging out. Last I remember, the going fad amongst younger girls was to trapse around amusment parks with flies undone. Retarded and pointless shoes that exude nothing but sexuality. How about...shirts that are revealing. Skin tight, show cleavage, show the midriff. Things like that. Girls have a tendency to show off thongs and an inch or two of butt crack. Then you have the whole dolling up of the face. Gobs of make-up, decked out hair...
It's like this. Most American girls try and attract a mate simply by trying to show off what they are.
A modest girl will try and attract a mate by trying show the world who she is. And all that shit on the outside, really has nothing to do with that.

He's not saying he should be the judge. He's expressing an opinion.
It's so amazing. Reporters should have the freedom to have ties with terrorists that snipe American soldier's. But a man can't say express a simple opinion, through his freedom of speech. Something as simple as what he said. No, he should go to Iran, when nothing he said was even CLOSE to what takes place in Iran or why it exists.
Yeah, you're right. A call for women to dress with a little decency is so out of line. You're right. How dare anybody express any opinions about women at all. Especially men...

What's so fucked up about it. Please, tell me. Read over my first post.
It's a shame that common sense talk is so offensive to people.

you and me both.
and rape has nothing to do with a woman's display of sexuality.
rape is a brutal and violent show of force and subjugation against another human being.
Little wing- you're so far off base I can't even begin to articulate how completely backwards you're sense of this is.
If you think girls who are 'dressed slutty' are 'inviting rape' you might want to take a good hard look in the mirror and try to determine what exactly leads you to believe it's a good thing to think girls 'invite rape'- get a grasp on the idea that it's the men who are at fault in a rape, not the women, and that men who use appearance as an excuse to rape another person are angry, mentally sick, non-human beings...
your expresison of this whole boys will be boys bullshit is exactly what's wrong with those societies that feel it's appropriate for women to cover up their bodies under, large, formless black sheets- it attempts to reverse the guilt of a violent crime from offender to victim, pervert the intent of a malicious act into something that can't be helped since these women are apparently asking for 'it' and allows men (and boys) to continue thinking they can do no wrong since it's "not their fault" that some girl decided to wear shoes some guy thinks of as inviting.
maybe you'd be happier in one of those backwards societies?
God knows I'd be happier if you were there instead of here.
