Singer's Superman Sequel Deal Confirmed
Source: Variety
October 30, 2006

Variety has confirmed that Bryan Singer has signed a deal with Warner Bros. Pictures to direct and produce a sequel to Superman Returns, with Legendary Pictures expected to co-finance.

The film is tentatively intended for release in summer 2009, although the studio stressed that there's not even a script or budget yet.

The sequel is apparently at the very beginning of the development process and, as with any other project, there are any number of factors that must be addressed before it is greenlit.

While Superman Returns wasn't the performer the studio had hoped for, it has earned more than $390 million worldwide and WB and Legendary say they will still turn a profit from the film.

The two companies are sure to insist that the sequel's production budget comes in under $200 million, adds the trade.

In terms of casting, Warner Bros. has an option on Superman Returns star Brandon Routh.

So, following the pattern, I suppose that Zod will be appearing in this one. I hope not.

Superman villains aren't the greatest set of antagonists.

I haven't seen the other one either.

And the originals were super-cheesy.

I think I read it just passed $200 or $300 million worldwide, making it kind of a success.

*edit:
"Pact with Singer signals that Warners isn't ready to walk away from the iconic franchise -- or Singer --even though "Superman Returns," while grossing more than $390 million worldwide, wasn't the performer studio had hoped for.

Warners and Legendary say they will still turn a profit from "Superman Returns," with Singer inking his deal just as the film crossed $200 million at the domestic box office. Insiders say Warners and Legendary are sure to insist that the sequel's production budget comes in under $200 million."

Maybe they can take the Hobbit screenplay and just use characters from Superman.

Superman Returns is the best blockbuster flick I saw this year. Pirates 2 and X-men 3 were both disappointing, but I really enjoyed Superman. It's one of my favorite superhero movies for sure (probably right behind Batman Begins), and I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Brandon Routh was the worst Clark Kent imaginable. As a Superman, unimpressive, but not necessarily bad. As Clark Kent, he was seriously horrendous. Clark Kent is supposed to be this "mild-mannered" kind of dorky guy. I dont know what Routh was, but he wasn't Clark Kent.

:? He played Kent basically the same way Christopher Reeve did.

I'm expecting Bizarro as the villain. Not sure why, though.

Not like it matters. Superman has the weakest rogues gallery.

I read somewhere that the new video game will give you a hint as to the villian in the next movie.

Braniac is in the video game, so I hope that holds true.

i would love it if they just said F-it, let's do the whole superman dies story, make it a trilogy or something and go over the top. It's a fun story, people are sorta familiar with it and i think it'd be a huge hit.
