I did a search and there were some threads about Death Cab, but nothing for discussion on the band in a general sense, so I thought I'd make one.
I was messing around with Death Cab today for the first time since a couple of months after Plans came out. I'm not sure what the consensus here in OB is, but I really don't have too much beef with these guys. In fact, I like pretty much everything I have heard by them - which would be Trans, We Have the Facts and Plans (also, the Postal Service album). Yea, it's soft, but it's hardly emo, and I tend to think their lyrics are a strong point. I think Ben Gibbard has a cool voice too.
They're not bad. I couldn't give two shits who listens to them or who their fan base is, but I don't have a problem with their stuff. I listen to Sound of Settling pretty frequently.

I dont like their reputation (which isn't their fault) but i fucking love this band. i've seen them as many times as i've seen pearl jam, and each time i've seen them its gotten better. excellent band.

He has a good voice, and their music is rather pleasing at times. Beyond that, I don't find them very interesting. The work Ben did with the Dntel dude was good the first 5 or so times I listened to it, but I haven't listened to Postal Service in a very long time, unlike Dntel.

These guys are easily my second favorite band.
You need to seriously listen to "The Photo Album". It's my second favorite album of theirs, right behind Transatlanticism. "The Photo Album" is definitely Ben's strongest lyric showcase, and it's got some kick ass music in there too. I recommend "We Laugh Indoors" (check the username), "A Movie Script Ending", "Blacking Out the Friction", "Why You'd Want to Live Here", and "Styrofoam Plates"......just listen to the whole damn album
I've tried to get into Death Cab-- I really have-- but I just can't get passed Gibbard's voice.
Yeah, I think it's either you like it, or you don't. No inbetween. I like it, but if you were interested, his voice is quite different on his earlier albums.
"Something About Airplanes"
"You Can Play These Songs With Chords"
Also, for anyone interested:
Ben had an old toy guitar and toy piano/xylophone type thingy lying around. He recorded like 10 tracks under the name "All-Time Quarterback". As soon as you hear it, you'll be like what the fuck?....it sounds like he got his equipment at Toys 'R Us. Good stuff though.

i'm a pretty big fan. saw them in july and it was easily the best concert i've been to in many, many years.
plans took a little while to grow on me but now i rate it almost as highly as trans. the photo album is also really strong. its definetly worth checking out. all the song mentioned before are great but particually we laugh indoors. it might just be my fav DCFC song. it fucking rocks live too.

Yeah, I saw them in April this year. Major jaw droppage there. They rock live. I'm going to see them in 24 days again too!
Plans is a good album, but easily not their best.
And yes, We Laugh Indoors is one of the most kick ass live songs of all time. Especially the interlude.

This album is not for the faint of heart, or the casual Death Cab fan...it's extremely lo fi and there isn't a whole lot of worthwhile material on here. There were a couple of decent songs like Plans Get Complex, but it's not something i regularly listen to.

Sent Packing is another excellent, albeit slow-moving, song from that project. Oh, and "Underwater!" is another goodie

I really like Transatlanticism. "Styrofoam Plates" is a really really good song, too. Number 4 on my list of bands whose name starts with Death

saw these guys last week and i left with the feeling of "that was someting good and im glad i experienced that". As far as the music goes these guys are pretty much the only newish band that i have been turned on to. As far as their fans go, why do girls feel the need to scream? Honestly, it doesnt make me think you are a better fan and a band that wants to be serious doesnt want you expressing your love for the band in that way. It actually makes people hate you.

The Photo Album (my fave) & Trans are amazing, Facts & Airplanes are pretty good, Plans i liked about half of, was bored w/ the other half.
i haven't seen 'em live in a few years ('03 was last time i think), but i've seen 'em a bunch of times since '99, few amazing shows, few subpar. they used to do a lot of cool covers (Head over Heels, Here Comes The Rain, Sweet Child O' Mine, etc.), i don't think they do 'em as much anymore.
unfortunately they play venues a lot larger than i'd ever care to see 'em in anymore (in addition to the tickets being $10-15 more than i'd spend to see them)

a lot of people get turned off by their name and that little girls love them. What most people do not know is that their name is a Beatles Reference to a song title in the Magical Mystery Tour movie

I haven't listened to much of them, but I saw them live at a festival last year and they were pretty decent. I do really like "Sound Of Settling", but I'm not very interested in delving any deeper.
