You have got to be kidding me. I wish I'd beat up more boy scouts when I was a kid.

L.A. Boy Scouts new merit badge: 'Respect Copyrights'

Friday, October 20, 2006

A Boy Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, etc., etc. He is also respectful of copyrights.

Boy Scouts in the Los Angeles area will now be able to earn a merit patch for learning about the evils of downloading pirated movies and music.

The patch shows a film reel, a music CD and the international copyright symbol, a "C" enclosed in a circle.

The movie industry has developed the curriculum.

"Working with the Boy Scouts of Los Angeles, we have a real opportunity to educate a new generation about how movies are made, why they are valuable, and hopefully change attitudes about intellectual property theft," Dan Glickman, chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America, said Friday.

Scouts will be instructed in the basics of copyright law and learn how to identify five types of copyrighted works and three ways copyrighted materials may be stolen.

Scouts also must choose one activity from a list that includes visiting a movie studio to see how many people can be harmed by film piracy. They also can create public service announcements urging others not to steal movies or music.

I was in cub scouts for a while.

While I got merit badges for stuff like freezing my ass off in a tent, burning stuff, shooting guns, hiking/swimming/biking/rowing long distances, and wrestling, it is pretty embarassing to see them giving a merit badge for that. Not that I really care.

Yes! Because pirating movies takes money away from all of the grips and hard working stagehands! If only the movie studios had another source of revenue to dip into - - like oh, say, the 80 MILLION dollars the stars of the movie are making? Cut that down to 78 million and all the little guys could get a raise.

Gimmie a break. And I know all about stealing music. I'm great at it!

Sigh. At least there's not a badge for displaying clear heterosexual tendancies - yet.

When I was in boy scouts, we had cool merit badges for things like tying knots, hiking, shooting rabbits, and pushing handicapped people down staircases.

I'm not too familiar with the Boy Scouts, so if I'm wrong, correct me.

But don't merit badges usually arise from actually doing something, not merely learning something?

You have to demonstrate knowledge and what have you. For citizenship merit badges (supposedly learning how to be a good citizen), in addition to reading through the pamphlet you have to go on a tour of a court house or state capitol, and write a letter to a government official. The idea of course, is to engage the material, as it were. I don't know what kind of interactive activity one could have with copyright laws, however. =/

I for one am all for respecting intellectual property rights, but I think there's a reason that this merit badge is only available in the LA area.

Intellectual property as whole is outmoded, or just feature films?

*whew*, that made a lot more sense.

I think with the greater impetus on Special Forces operations in modern conflicts, a youth paramilitary has more relevance than ever, assuming they emphasize orienteering, wilderness survival, and small unit maneuvers over lame things such as copyright law.

Since this is in CA, I wonder if they can get Metallica to perform at their next Boy Scout meeting.
