I'm thinking about moving from a PC laptop to a Apple laptop of some sort. This thread is for RMs to describe to me whether their move from PC to Mac was a success.
I dont see the upside of getting a mac. Unless you just like machines that look prettier and cost more.
Don't you get tired? Answer the original poster's question or stay out of the thread. Your comments are irrelevant.
The guy's asking for info on switching from PC to Mac. You don't think cost and practicality are relevant? You must be tired.
Buggy's a big boy. He can stick up for himself.
Personally, I'd give Zeb the benefit of the doubt and assume he's not mentally deficient and knows how much a Mac costs before asking the kind of question he's asking.
He asked for people's experiences in switching from PCs to Macs. If people want to post their horror stories, go nuts, but once again Buggy the Windows Warrior felt the need to jump into the thread to save another lost soul from the evils of Apple's overpriced and overhyped products.
Zeb, I switched over to Macs a few years ago and have been nothing but pleased. I don't foresee myself buying a PC anytime in the near future, if ever. As far as the switch itself, things are intuitive enough that you shouldn't have any trouble getting started on a Mac, but it is a completely different operating system so there's a bit of a learning curve. It doesn't take long to figure it all out though, and there's plenty of resources online to solve any problems you might run into.
Back to Buggy and the Mac bashers for a second. If someone is willing to spend the money for a product and are completely satisfied with said product, what's it to you? Really, what's a few hundred bucks when it comes to a piece of equipment that will be used every day for the next 4-5 years? It would be one thing if Macs were notoriously poor systems, but if you talk to actual Mac owners a vast majority of them love their systems. Do you hang out at car dealerships and point people toward cheaper vehicles? Did Steve Jobs rape your grandma? I don't get it.

"What's it to me" is only because the poster asked opinions, dude. And my opinion is that, for your money, Windows systems provide far better value for your buck. This really isnt in dispute. Apple doesnt make jalopy computers. They look pretty and many people like them just fine. My wife has one, in fact, and she is totally happy with it. I dont tell her she's an idiot and needs to go get a Windows PC, so you just need to chill out a little bro However, that doesnt change my opinion. Macs are overpriced compared to any other comparable system on the market. This isnt because Macs have some kind of super cool inventive magic that makes them better than Windows boxes. It's just Apples marketing strategy with ALL their products. Just about everything they sell is overpriced compared to any other non-apple product. It's like paying for brand name drugs at the pharmacy, you really dont get a whole lot different except for the brand name, but you could get the generics and pay a whole lot less. If someone is willing to pay the extra bucks for that, then be my guest, as long as they know full well what they are doing.
It's also funny you think of me as a "Windows Warrior". I'd actually suggest Linux over either Mac or Win depending on what they were going to be doing anyway

I made the switch a few months ago. I was so fucking sick of my window's comp getting viruses, spyware, and crashing many times. no matter how many times i did an adaware scan, or norton update and scan, it seemed to have problems.
I am very satisfied with my macbook. It gets the job done, hasn't slowed down at all, and runs office just aswell. In my opinion, if you are not a gamer or really into special programs that only run on windows, the switch is worth the money.

So what do the extra $$$ give you as a Mac user?
I've never operated a Mac, so are there any significant benefits other than being relatively more virus proof than your average PC box?
these are good questions and am curious as to what answers a "mac person" would give to this.
i'm a linux guy usually, but have to run windows at work and haven't gotten around to dual-booting my new desktop yet (and don't know if i ever will since it is pretty much exclusively used for itunes and games).
if the switch is simply for virus-related reasons, i would highly recommend downloading ubuntu linux and trying it:

you can try it without installing it (their installer discs work as live cds) to see if it will work with your hardware and it is completely free. however, if you use a lot of software that is windows-exclusive you will have a few problems (but you would have the same problems with a mac).
