This seems out-of-line to me. When I watched the vid, it started off looking like it was all in good fun, the girl was laughing about it, but as it went on, it looked to me like this got out of hand, and she looked uncomfortable about the whole thing. I think as the situation went on, she looked more like she was trying to laugh it off as a way of not letting on how freaked out or uncomfortable about the whole thing she really was. And the one meat head who decided to give her like a freaking duct tape cast around her arms looked like a real shit head to me. You can wrap someone's wrists in like two loops of duct tape and they won't be able to pull them apart. Goober in the video must have wrapped her hands like 20-30 times. I think the pranksters in this video have some disciplinary action coming their way in the near future.

Don't most elements of military life have a homo-erotic aspect? As such, wouldn't extending such behavior towards females also have a sexual aspect? If you can bugger your male squadmate with a broom, wouldn't it be exclusive to not do the same with your female squadmate? No. Most elements of military life have extreme homo-phobic aspects. Calling someone gay in one way or another is a very common insult.

I have almost no experience working with females in the military, my units were always male-only, so I can't really expand on this particular situation. I will tell you though that females (marines at least) have a very strong tendency to polarize in the military. Either they become tom-boys and act just like the guys and are mostly accepted as such, or they become extremely sexually active and feminine, meaning they are the barracks whore. This observation is from a limited perspective though so it by no means is completely accurate nor does it apply in all parts of the military.

I'd imagine that it'd be physically uncomfortable after a few moments, no? It is a rather mean spirited thing to do, but I think the significance of gender is being overstated here. I don't imagine this treatment is reserved for females, do you?

To your 1st point, it becomes very evident that this situation is emotionally uncomfortable/disturbing to the girl as much as, if not more so, than the physical discomfort. At least from my viewing of it.

To your 2nd point, no, quite the contrary; I would say that 90% of the time this type of gag is aimed at males by males. But you're kidding yourself if you profess to not see the difference in a group of male troops doing something like this to a fellow male soldier and the situation shown in the video.
