ummm yea right.

there seems to be alot of animosity towards police on this board.

all you see are, cops are dicks cops are this cops are that. maybe the reasons cops are such dicks to you is because youre such dicks to them, and they know.

my cousin is a cop for the one community around here, and i hear all his stories. people are just idiots, plain and simple.

if you walked up to me, and spit on me, what do you think is going to happen? yet you do this to a cop hoping he beats the snot outta you so you can cry police brutality and hopefully get some money out of it.

in all my experiences with the police (various pulled over for speeding, throwing a cat on in a puddle, throwing snowballs at cars) i have learned if you say yes sir no sir, and be even a smidge respectful, they will do their best to help you.

so why do YOU hate the cops so much?

It's hard to be a humble servant of the people when you have a badge and a gun.

I disagree. I think everyone here overestimates the effect carrying a gun at your hip has on people. If anything they are more likely to try to avoid a conflict. The paperwork involved when you actually have to shoot a gun is daunting and not even close to worth it, I should know because I carried a gun as a security guard for a year.

I have been arrested many times.

I have no problem with being arrested if i am breaking the law. I'm not going to bitch about that. I've done a lot of dumb shit in my day.

But i have been treated with with such contempt and disrespect by a lot of cops for NO reason. Even when being completely cooperative, some cops feel it necessary to ridicule and harrass you the entire time you are in their presence. Then when you get to jail, the cops that run the jail are even WORSE. These guys will do anything and everything they can to make you completely miserable.

I understand doing your job. There is no reason to be unprofessional and disrespectful to someone who is being completely cooperative with you.

Another thing is how cops act when they are around other cops. A LOT of cops have this us vs. them mentality. It grows exponentially when there is a group of them. They will literally bully people when they are in groups. I've seen them harass people for the slightest things just to make themselves look cool in front of the buddies, it seems like. I've seen male cops do this to girls, for fucks sake.

I just try to avoid Police whenever possible.

You think all cops are like that? You must have been arrested an awful lot of times and done an awful lot of bad things to have such vast experience with them. I'm not trying to be a smartass here. I think you are either 1.) way overreacting and making ridiculous generalizations, or 2.) you are a repeat offender that probably deserved the treatment you got from the cops if you really committed that many crimes or were involved in enough suspicious activity to be questioned by them multiple times.

Either way, I find it kind of alarming that a 32 year old could harbor such a childish resentment towards cops. Afraid to call them even if you need them? I don't know how I can tell someone 10 years older than me to grow up, but that is what I feel like saying.

Funny - I find it immature that someone with limited life experience is telling a 32 year old about what life experiences he should have had. Go figure.

I have been arrested probably 10 times for various things. I've dealt with the police at least twice that many times for various reasons. Nothing very serious or violent or anything like that. Most of them were in college.

So my "generalizations" are based on actual experiences. I've seen that behavior WAY more times than i have seen cops act professionally. Just about everyone i know that has dealt with the police have similar stories.

I've also found that if you drive a really nice car or seem to have a lot of money, you instantly get treated with contempt.

Maybe it's just the Oklahoma cops, but i doubt it.

See, this is what i am talking about. Right there. Who the hell are you or a cop to judge anyone. That's not their job. Is that part of their training? To ridicule and harass people? Is that supposed to be some sort of deterant?

Nobody DESERVES to be treated like shit by the cops if they are cooperative.

Are you kidding?...

What exactly do you know about my life experiences? Obviously not very much. But since you were kind enough to imply, I will be kind enough to tell you that my life experience has absolutely nothing to do with this thread right now, because guess what, we are talking about his experiences, not mine. I'm going to hit you with a dose of logic and sense here in this next paragraph, but don't hurt yourself reading it, it is coming from someone who is 15 years younger than you so it is probably inaccurate!

When did I tell him what life experiences he "should have had"? I didn't. I suggested a couple options of what might be the case based on the information he gave in his post. Did you really not understand that? I think it is pretty fair to assume that if someone has been arrested multiple times and had confrontations with the police many additional times, it is safe to say they probably committed crimes or were engaged in something suspicious multiple times? And obviously generalizing and becoming phobic of law enforcement is a mature reaction to those experiences.

Go figure.

Oh, Christ. I don't mean they're going to USE the gun. I just mean that there is a certain boost in, something, call it ego, or self-esteem, or power, that comes from wearing a uniform. Not just a uniform, but certain "costumes" in gerneal. I know that I feel more sexy when I'm wearing a tuxedo, or even a new pair of shoes. I feel emboldened in my job when I am sent as the representative of my company to a negotiation. I am treated with respect, often higher than I may deserve, because I am the face of a company with a lot of financial power behind it.

I can only imagine the power trip that comes from being the armed face of the authority of the government, with the general level of respect and deferrence that 99% of people treat you with. It's not just respect though, it's FEAR as well. I don't get anyone fearing me in my job.

I totally respect what the police do. I've thought that I might be happy in life being a police officer, believe it or not. But you can't tell me that the power and responsibility that come with being an officer of the law doesn't go the heads of even the best at times.

One thing I've found in the cops who I know is that they are, to a much greater degree than the general population, people who have lived their whole lives in the town where they are a cop. A lot of times they didn't have the opportunities that a lot of us have had to go away to college, or the desire to relocate for the sake of a change in scenery. The police department is a good opportunity for a young person who is not stupid, but not brilliant, in good physical shape but not financially well-off, and has managed to stay out of trouble for the most part and cares about his community. You don't see a lot of cops who move to a new city in order to become a cop there.

So, IMO, this tends to lead to a bit of myopia in their view of the world. They aren't going to be real understanding of different people of different backgrounds, especially from foreign cultures, and this is why cops get a bad reputation for racism.

Anyway, I do own a home, so I have no problems with the cops anymore, and I treat everyone with respect, so I've never had any static with a cop. I think the VAST majority of people do treat policemen with all the respect they deserve and then some. They just have to deal with that element in society that DOESN'T respect them on a daily basis, so they have a skewed view of how much respect they actually get. So while I have respect for the police, I have no sympathy for cops who whine about the lack of respect they get.

Good lord - grow up. Part of being an adult is realizing that people form opinions on things based on their own experiences. You telling him how he should feel is childish and narrow-minded.

Growing up on Long Island, I found most of the local cops were overpaid morons who spent most of their time hanging out at firehouses. Living in NYC as I got older, I remember horrible events in the city such as Abner Louima being billy club raped in a precinct house and Amadou Diallo being shot 41 times in the vestibule of his building. I realize there are some good cops out there who are trying to actually serve the population, 9/11 proved this point to me; but I try to avoid them as much as possible.

And Peeps, I'm sorta wondering how many people do you know who have actually gone up to a cop and spit on them hoping for a lawsuit??

You are right. Nobody inherently deserves to be treated like shit. I know from experience that while many people will claim "they weren't doing anything", they were actually acting like assholes. And I have heard all the stories too. My friends used to get arrested constantly in north carolina because we were always drunk and uncooperative. But I am not short-sighted enough to believe that there aren't a large majority of cops out there that devote their life to helping people and aren't jerks. The ratio of good cops to bad cops is the same as the ratio anywhere in this country, if not better. I had a boss once that was a total dick, yelling at people, making people do stupid shit, and I have heard all sorts of stories about people and their shitty bosses. Do I think all bosses are dicks or do I refuse to put myself in situations where I might have to interact with a boss? Only if I'm ignorant.

There will always be asshole cops just like there are asshole people. But I can't imagine that you think most cops are there to ridicule and harass people. I'm sure it happens sometimes but is nowhere close to the norm. As far as judging people goes, that has nothing to do with this. They can judge you and you can judge them till kingdom come, none of that has any bearing until it is acted on.

So, this still comes down to you seeming to think almost all cops are assholes and just looking for the opportunity to belittle etc etc etc normal people. I still think that is an immature attitude. It is entirely possible that you have had shitty luck and have indeed been an innocent duckling that has just been unfortunate enough to run into a lot of shitty cops, or good cops in shitty moods (which is entirely possible if they have to deal with unruly college kids nonstop). And hey, if you want to extend that reasoning onto all the police in this country, that is your prerogative, but personally I think you should get over it.

My friend built his law practice in Pittsburgh solely on people suing cops that they had walked up to and spit upon for no reason and then got beat up for it. My friend lives in a $1.8 million house and drives a Lambourghini.

Wow. You obviously didn't read or understand my post, and you obviously don't care. Thanks for the advice though. I guess I really should stop telling people how they should feel

I'll get back to you in 15 years when hopefully I can be as wise as you.

What a fucking joke.
