I want to convert a bunch of Wav files to MP3 for putting on a portable device but don't want to have to burn an audio CD and then rip to MP3 as file names and tags seem to be lost doing that. It also is very time consuming process. I use Musicmatch and Nero but don't see any way of going directly from WAV to MP3 directly on my hard drive or even directly to MP3 on a CD short of burning an audio CD then ripping. Does anyone know a good way of doing this or a good quality piece of software for converting?
I got a reply to the same question elswhere about software called LAME and this question is for anyone who might be using it.
Reading about LAME it sounds like what I am looking for. However I am having great difficulty installing it. I downloaded it from PCWorld.com but attempting to install it creates a folder DLL_387 with some files in it but nothing executable in it. Nor can I find any executable file elsewhere. Tried to download it elsewhere and get a file called LAME386.rar which I have absolutely no idea what to do with. It is not something you can execute by doeubleclicking it. I assume 396 and 386 refer to versions of the software 3.96 and 3.87. I installed Razorlame but being just a frontend need to install Lame to do anything. I see in Razorlame where you can change the source of LAME if its not in the same folder as Razorlame but again cannot find anything executable.

I have yet to find a reliable conversion tool, and the ones I had used in the past, due to an operating system change, seem to have disappeared.
At the moment, I'm using iTunes for conversions, storing converted mp3's onto an external drive, and keeping the .wav files on the CDs I have - All the .wav files I had on my hard drive I ran through iTunes (converted) and "dumped" (deleted).
I don't see any way in Musicmatch of converting WAV files on my hard drive into MP3 files without burning to CD then ripping back. Am I missing something?

And unpack the files in your lame386.rar file (RAR is just like ZIP, it's just another compression program/method). WinRAR is not free, but it should work just fine if you just want to unpack the file you downloaded.

if you have nero, it is very simple...go to the audio section of nero, and there is a program called 'encode audio files' where it says add, just select the .wav files you want to encode and where it says output file format, change it to mp3. set the directy you want the files to be encoded to and your all set....
It's actually using the LAME MP3 encoder to encode files and comes bundles with is so you don't need to install anything additionally.
thats what i used to use...when i wanted to have an mp3 copy of some of my boots...but i grew bored of that when i started getting several a day.

thats all well and good, but i have musicmatch 7.2 i think, not even the latest one, and if you chose file, convert files, you get a dialouge box. on the left hand side is the source file selection, and on the right its the destination file.
you have drop down menus on both, MP3 WAV and one other i cant think of off the top of my head
