Gremmie Out of Control

every beach has a clown who thinks he knows it all (hang-ten outta santa fe when surf comes out tomorrow lets go)
and he's always practicing his cowabunga call (cowabunga)
but he'll never scramble when the big waves start to roll
cause there's nothing worse than a gremmie out of control
gremmie out of control
gremmie out of control
there's nothing worse than a gremmie out of control
the kids always know that gremmie's talk is cheap (ride the hula-han over the pipeline bonsai to the saddle bowl)
oh they just try to ignore this ugly creep (cowabunga)
his board is always full of dings
cause he's always doing stupid things
and there's nothing worse than a gremmie out of control
gremmie out of control
gremmie out of control
there's nothing worse than a gremmie out of control
gremmie out of control
gremmie out of control
there's nothing worse than a gremmie out of control
there's nothing worse than a gremmie out of control
there's nothing worse than a gremmie out of control

vs

Big Wave

I used to be crustacean
In an underwater nation
And I surf in celebration
Of a billion adaptations
Got me a big wave, ride me a big wave, got me a big wave.
Got me a big wave, ride me a big wave, got me a big wave.
I feel the need
Planted in me
Millions of years ago
Can't you see
The oceans size?
Defining time
And tide
Arising
Arms laid upon me
Being so kind
To let me ride
I scream in affirmation
Of connecting dislocations
And exceeding limitations
By achieving levitation
Got me a big wave, ride me a big wave, got me a big wave.
Got me a big wave, ride me a big wave, got me a big wave.
I feel the need
Planted in me
Millions of years ago
Can't you see
The oceans size?
Defining time
And tide
Arising
Arms laid upon me
Being so kind
To let me ride
Got me a ride.
I got me a ride.

Seeing as how it’s getting close to Summer for those south of the Equator, I figured I would throw something out in celebration of this occasion. Both of these songs are what they are, not meant to be classic Pearl Jam songs. Both songs, however are clearly ones where the band can let loose and simply have a good time.

Right away from the opening riff of Gremmie, you get the feeling this isn’t your epic song. The mood lightens up further with Stone in the background yelling phrases such as “cowabunga!” In Ed’s voice you can hear him just enjoying singing about one of his own favorite pastimes and the local idiots he likely ran into down in San Diego. As for the lyrics, they are about a rookie(or, in surfer talk a gremmie). Who is all talk and no game. The metaphor can be made to any guy who talks and talks but when he actually has to do something, he can’t really live up to his own advertising.

Big Wave might have one of my favorite riffs from all of Pearl Jam. A fun song that really comes alive when played in a live setting. The mini-jam session in San Diego was a blast to listen to. Where as Gremmie was a song about a rookie who clearly didn’t know what he was doing, Big Wave seems to be about a veteran who is so gifted the need was planted in him from the crustaceans millions of years ago. The chorus is the simple statement of him catching the wave, and the music almost seems to speed up to simulate the adrenaline rush of finally catching the wave.

As for the songs themselves, they are what they are, fun little songs meant for you to enjoy, rather than the deep inner turmoil that goes on in a lot of Pearl Jam’s work. Myself, I have to give a slight edge to Big Wave because of the riff. Although I enjoy both very much.

Previous The Best…
1.existential album closer
2. failing love song
3.seize the day song
4. anti-war song
5. song for unrequited love
6. song for a father
7. guitar solo
8. song about getting away
9. political call to arms
10. song for a blown love

Big Wave simply because I've never heard Gremmie out of Control. I think MITS would be a good surfing song too though

Gremmie. I don't listen to either one actively, but I usually skip Big Wave on S/T and I always let Lost Dogs play all the way through. Plus... Cowabunga! I wish PJ let their stupid side show a little more often.

Hey, sometimes the goofy song wins the day..just like now. Gremmie is a pretty cool time, even if it isn't so serious. Big Wave always seemed surplus to requirements for me on Avocado, whereas Gremmie is awesome fun driving down the beach in summer. That Music for Our Mother Ocean is a wicked soundtrack as well.

GREMMIE!

Both of these aren't that great. Big Wave had a lot of potential, but the repetitiveness just irritates me.

Big Wave is still the better song though.

well I wont repeat my feelings on big wave, though its grown on me a little as just a fast litlle catchy throw away tune. gremmie is a weird cool number.

ultimately both are kinda skippers.

 Beat me to it.

I love listening to Oceans surfing, Big Wave doesn't do anything for me out there, and I've never tried Gremmie. Oceans, Go, Alive, Marker in the Sand, Last Exit, Release, Drifting, Animal, Tremor Christ, No Way, Indifference, Not For You, Deep, Nothing As It Seems all made my surfing playlist. Yeah, i have a waterproof ipod case (dork ) it was a bit pricey but so worth it when I'm out there listening to my favourite songs. :)

Gremmie. It's a lot more fun and catchier IMO.

I love Big Wave, seeing it at Antwerp was a blast. I love the energy there, it's one of PJ's best uptempo rockers in a long time, from the drum beat at the start, that kick ass riff (am I right in thinking it's in 5/4 time?), the brilliant delivery of the whole "I feel the need...to let me ride" section, the ohs and woahs, and the rapidfire "Got me a big wave" plus the jam and how it comes back into the riff. On the PJ album, one of my favourite pieces of lead, and a song I find myself listening to more and more often. Kick ass solo too.

not a big fan of either song. Big Wave is a fairly fun rocker. I like its energy, and the "I feel a need..." post chorus is really cool. Plus it's good live. It'll never be a favorite and feels like a b-side (some of my issues with the song stem from the fact that it is actually on the album proper--if it was a b-side 'd like it more) but it is decent.

I haven't liked gremmie from about the 3rd time I listened to it. The first time I thought what the fuck. the second time I thought, oh, well this is kind of neat, and then by the third time I've felt no need to ever listen to it again. This song only comes on by accident.
