Winter has come early in Alberta—and that’s bad news for the mares and foals living on PMU ranches there. No longer needed for the production of hormone replacement therapy drugs, these equines need a place to go, and fast.

Because there is not enough grass to leave the animals on pasture, several of the PMU ranchers have decided to wean their foals at the end of the month. Any foals who have not been adopted by November 30, 2006, will be sent to auction—and an uncertain fate.

The California-based Animali Farm is working hard to find good adoptive homes for the more than 100 foals and mares facing the November 30 deadline. If you can give one of these equines a second chance, or if you would like additional information, please visit Animali Farm online or email animali@aol.com. You can also call them directly at (805) 938-0174.

If you cannot adopt a horse, please forward this email to all of your horse friends. The only way to get these babies adopted is to get the word out to enough people, and we need your help to do it.

you should PM this to yieldgirl either here or on ana's board. She's involved with horses in her job and may know people etc.

i'm unclear as to how me or a horse enthusiast i know obtaining one of these little guys this way is a more certain fate for the horse than me or a horse enthusiast i may or may not know obtaining these horses via auction.

The auctions are usually for using the horses for slaughter. If you adopt one, generally they will check you out first & make sure you are adopting for a pet and not for an auction.

people in other countries eat them, for one. from what I read, that's the main use of this slaughter. A bill is out there to end this practice in the US (the slaughter, not the eating which I believe is already illegal), but these little ones aren't safe from the auction floor.

You got me. People are strange about this type of thing. They'll eat a pig but wince at the thought of eating a dog. Emotional attachment, I think.

I don't think people should eat any animal, but that's another story. I don't really understand the distinction between the animals that makes one ok to eat and another off limits.

I never did see that movie. I though Babe was a pig.

lets not forget about all the HUMAN children that need to be adopted into a good home.

whats your thoughts on horse racing?

I don't like horse racing, dog racing, frog jumping, etc. I don't like the circus or the zoo. My thoughts are that animals aren't here for our amusement. These animals are too often abused when they are no longer fast enough or cute enough or whatever else the owner was profiting from.

some would argue that thse animals are treated very well in these fields? not that i agree, but i have been confronted with that side of the argument

one guy who works at a local horse racing track once told me that the horses are treated better than i am?

i am certainly not buying that 100%, but it is a counter point i have heard?

He was. But the question was raised why the farmer would eat ducks and chickens and sheep and pigs but not horses and dogs and cats. The answer was that was because the farmer only eats the stupid animals, not the smart and helpful animals. So the story is all about Babe proving that he is not a stupid animal.

Dog shows? Yes, I'm against them. Some of the dogs are there just for profit. Others have weirdos for owners. I saw "Best in Show". I know.

wouldnt you say that average joe dog owner could be "weirdo's" as well? i have always assumed that the majority of these dogs are treated like royalty? of course i could be wrong
