for years i (and im sure MANY of you) have been thinking about how great a ncaa football playoff would be... anyway, i thought we could all kinda come up with a proposal for the format... here is mine:

i would go with 8 teams to start (but within a few years im sure it would expand to 12, maybe 16).... anyway, you would go ahead and still have the four major bowls rotate the final game...

for example... the semifinals may be hosted by the Sugar and Rose one year... say then the Fiesta will get the championship, and you have the Orange as the 3rd/4th place game (oh, the ole 3rd/4th place games, where have they gone?) which airs right before the championship (viewership would still be plentiful)... this in turn would not hurt any of the big 4 bowls .... and in turn, you can go ahead and add four of the next big bowls (cotton, alamo, etc.) as the elite 8 games every year...

then, just go ahead and take the other 40 teams and put them in the blockbuster bowl and all that crap...

i dont get why this wouldnt work... you would still have the bowl games, it's just that they wouldnt be predetermined, BUT they would still contain the best teams in the nation... at least 4 of the top 8 anyway... it's not like the rose only takes bigten/pacten anymore, so why not just make the game that much more important?...

i do know that if you put this in place, then people like me would have actually watched all of auburn/vatech if the winner was moving on.... on the other hand, is there really anyone who wouldnt watch the game if it WAS a semifinal or elite 8 contest?... that's what i thought

just think... this year it would look something like this:

8Pitt/1USC winner
vs.
5Michigan/4Utah winner

VS.

7VaTech/2OU winner
vs.
6Texas/3Auburn winner

AND IT WOULD ONLY TAKE THREE WEEKS....

i just dont get it... with this system i would think that SO MUCH more loot could be made... and that IS what it is all about... money. money, money

No automatic conference bids. top 4 teams according to the polls/computers play in 2 rotating bcs bowls, followed by a one game playoff for national champion.

that'd be great.

problem is that utah would have been left out this year in favor of a 1 loss team

I think preseason polls should be done away with. No polls until about week 8.

Is it possible to make a system similar to the ncaa basketball tournment, may the top 24 teams instead?

THAT is a good idea. In fact it has been an idea that has been tossed around for a while. This would allow teams like Utah and Auburn who "come out of no where" a chance to be ranked up with the other unbeatens, rather than starting out at #35 in the nation and have to work their way up, only to fall short of the two top teams that have been there from week 1.

Personally, I think the BCS System works well. While it is far from flawless, you will have objections to EVERY system. Because if you have a tourny with say, 8 teams, the #9 team in the nation is going to be complaining because they are being left out. If you take the top 4 then you have #5 looking from the outside in. After all, that is why they added that play in game for the basketball tournament between 64 and 65 for the 64th seed.

Here is my playoff system

No pre-season polls. Do it after the 4th game or so. Don't let the coaches vote. These guys basically only watch the teams in their conference anyway. They are biased towards their conference teams, it's just stupid to have them vote. Let the AP vote and let the computers vote based on strength of schedule, strength of conference, etc... At the end of the season have the top 8 teams in a tourney. Forget about the bowls, they are meaningless these days. Use the corporations by tagging their name into each game. The #1/#8 Fed Ex game etc... That's 4 weeks worth of games. USC/Oklahoma have been waiting 5 weeks to play this game...you see, problem solved.

in college football you could easily leave out #9 without complaints... you might even be able to just take top 4 and leave out #5 without complaints... well, not without complaints, but definitely without the fear that you left out the best team in the nation from the title picture

there is a better chance of a playoff than this EVER happening... the preseason polls are the best advertising that the NCAA has going... preseason polls will NEVER end...

They got it right according to what? Auburn deserves a shot just as much as USC or Okla. I guess they should have ran up the score last night because that's what the game is about

i dont think the argument is IF they got it right... the argument is that the BCS isnt the right way to find a champion... apples, oranges

i believe they got it right in that the best 2 teams, in my opinion, are playing in the championship game.

or better yet, maybe Auburn's coach should have taken a play out of mack brown's handbook and begged for votes... what a douche

You might be right. I'm not really sure considering how dominant uburn's defense looked. And even if they did "get it right"(seems so stupid to me), they have gotten it wrong in almost every season besides this year. The system blows, that's why they tweak it every year.

so just because Mack Brown 'lobbied' for votes, coaches/writers changed their anonymous poll votes? Texas got into the rose bowl, because there was creedence to everything he said, and when he got there, he won the game. Cal got beaten by Texas Tech. They are, in fact, the douches.
