I don't dig it.
It sounds like a band playing in a room, with a bunch of microphones set up. Riot Act and self-titled both have very basic, boring production. If you are in a recording studio, you may as well use some of the features. I don't listen to a record to pretend I'm listening to a live performance. I listen to a live performance for that. They use some more reverb and effects on songs like 'Gone', but still it doesn't sound as good as Brendan O'Brien used to do.
Binaural is a good example of what I'm talking about. Whether or not you like the production, at least it sounded different from previous PJ records. Part of the reason I love Binaural so much is that the record is so muddy and dark, and then songs like Insignifance and Grievance and Light Years just explode in the live setting. That's what I'm looking for, variety in the studio with sounds and mixings and overall production values, and then a consistently ass-kicking live show (which PJ always delivers).
I believe we got an very large amount of variety in production from Ten right through to Binaural. Even with O'Brien as the producer for Vs.-Yield, we got a ton of different sounds. Now, it seems like the Pearl Jam ship is on hover with Adam Kasper. I'd like to see something new.

i dig the sound of the production...when i listen to the vinyl of the album closely on headphones, there are a lot of subtle things going on...there is a simplicity factor present but i kind of like the 'intimacy' it creates...just a thought...

overall I'm not a huge fan of his sound. it sounds a bit tinny or hollow. On certain songs it isn't too bad but there has never been a time when I really liked it, and a few songs (come back and SH come to mind) really suffer for it. It lacks the fullness of O'brein's production.
The only song of adam kasper's where I think the production is really good is I Am Mine

Jeff I get the feeling you're really not a fan of the fade at the end of Life Wasted. Call it a hunch.
I wonder if he has those sites bookmarked for emergencies like this

He did a lot better job with the sound on Riot Act than on s/t.
I think that Yield is about as close as the band ever got to really experimenting in textures. Vitalolgy has some great moments (the haunting introduction to Not for You!), and No Code in general has a very distinctive feel, but one place this band has always disappointed me is in their complete disinterest in studio experimentation.
Pretty much most of their career just sounds like a band, in a room, with mics. Hell, that was the fucking CONCEPT of one of their albums (Binaural). What a bunch of techtards.
He's not a good producer. The songs stand up well by themselves because they're well written songs, but a bit of production would definitely have helped, for example, Ghost, Help Help, Severed Hand and Life Wasted. There is no good reason for depriving us of that solo.
Yield is my favourite in terms of production, the layers and warmth are fantastic, but even where it was just the band in a room with mics, O'Brien got a much better sound - Vs. is a lot better produced than Riot Act or Pearl Jam.

In general I like all the urgency in the vitalogy songs--the production really captured the immediecy and menace of the songs
McP--what would you like to see them do differently? What would be an example of the kind of studio experimentation you'd like. Do the layered vocals on some of the s/t songs (or a song like all night and black red yellow) count?

That and the new Sabres logo rank equally on my disgust scale.
