Anyone wanna buy me a plane ticket to NYC?

Rob Harvilla reports: Ah yes, New Year's Eve, that most teeth-gnashing/garment-rending of holidays, wherein we adopt unreasonable expectations of awesomeness and are inevitably disappointed when we wind up gaping at Dick Clark on the television or passing out 45 minutes before the ball drops. (Or both.) If only someone would put on a decent show and give us something to actually do.
In this spirit, Wilco has gleefully sprung an "October Surprise" upon us all: a post on WilcoWorld.net has just announced a headlining New Year's Eve blowout at none other than Madison Square Garden, with The Flaming Lips and Sleater-Kinney as co-headliners (the latter of whom we haven't heard from in quite some time-- fingers crossed for new material). Small pieces of paper admitting entrance to the gig go on sale via Ticketmaster November 5th, but the Wilco site will point you in the direction of an Internet pre-sale beginning Monday, November 1st.
Pitchfork had run afoul of a few wild rumors about an MSG gig (other permutations involved The Shins and... Devo?!) in previous weeks, but this is the real deal, and should serve as the most bombastic New Year's gig for any of these bands, the Lips' longstanding tradition of ringing in the New Year in Chicago notwithstanding. ("New York can lick my dick," notes a FlamingLips.com message poster named Emperor Clobbersaurus. "NYE belongs to Chicago." Touche, Clobbersaurus, touche.)
As for other Wilco happenings, completist fans have had a tough time taking it all in lately. In addition to the band's ongoing (and almost completely sold-out) U.S. jaunt that's scheduled to last at least through November, there are solo projects to consider. First, there's bassist John Stirratt's collaboration with his twin sister, Laurie, entitled Arabella. Second, Glenn Kotche has once again joined Darin Gray under the name On Fillmore, releasing Sleeps with Fishes on Drag City. And of course, as previously noted in these virtual pages, The Wilco Book-- featuring photos, essays, and other happy indulgences-- will officially be released on November 1st, with a bonus Wilco CD in tow boasting tons of previously unheard material.
Meanwhile, it's worth noting that Wilco's next release might actually come with the imminent soundtrack to the imminent The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. The disc also features material from Avril Lavigne, Prince Paul, The Shins, and... The Flaming Lips. Hmm. A possible theme for the New Year's Eve show may be emerging....
Fans who pick up "The Wilco Book" on Nov. 15 will be treated to an exclusive bonus CD with 12 previously unreleased songs recorded during sessions for this year's Nonesuch album "A Ghost Is Born." Among the cuts are an alternate version of album track "Hummingbird," "Pure Bug Beauty," "The High Heat," "Barnyard Pimp" and "Diamond Claw."
The tracks showcase the more experimental side of Wilco's sound, including "What Good Am I," which was recorded in February 2003 in a hotel room in Perth, Australia. "Barnyard Pimp" blends a studio improvisation session with a tour bus jam, while "Rottnest" features only former member Leroy Bach on piano and Mikael Jorgensen on laptop computer. Closer "Hamami" finds band members utilizing screws, coins and chunks of metal as percussion instruments.
Jorgensen calls "Diamond Claw" "technically and musically my favorite piece of recorded music that came out of the sessions for 'A Ghost Is Born.'" As for album contender "The High Heat," he notes, "This particular drum sound isn't my favorite; it's rather unsophisticated. However, the feel and atmosphere of the tune trumps and technical issues that I have."
As for the 160-page "The Wilco Book" (Picture Box Inc.), it sports previously unseen images of Wilco by photographer Michael Schmelling, essays from band members and authors such as Rick Moody, paintings and assorted other visual images. The tome will retail for $29.95.
Fans who pre-order the book from Wilco's official Web site by Sept. 30 will be eligible to win an autographed reprint of a photo from the volume.
The group's latest lineup has also recorded its first song, "Just a Kid," for the upcoming "Spongebob Squarepants" soundtrack, due in November. The cut sports backing vocals by frontman Jeff Tweedy's son Spencer's band, the Blisters.
In related news, Wilco bassist John Stirratt and his sister Laurie (ex-Blue Mountain) will on Sept. 21 release "Arabella," their debut album for Broadmoor Records. The set boasts contributions from Tweedy, Bach and Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche, as well as John's Autumn Defense colleague Pat Sansone.
Wilco kicks off an extensive North American tour in support of "A Ghost Is Born" Tuesday (Sept. 14) in Columbia, Mo. Calexico, Joseph Arthur, Fiery Furnaces and Deerhoof will support at various stages.
Here is the track list for "The Wilco Book" CD:

"What Good Am I"
"Here Comes Everybody"
"Hummingbird" (Soma version)

The book is nice, but don't expect anything from the CD -- it's mostly outtakes.
Does anyone need Yankee Hotel on 180 gram double LP?

anyone go to this show?????
No one from here went, but there's some pretty good reviews up at viachicago.org They basically sold out the place with the exception of some suites in the 300 level. Good times.

I had intentions of going, but decided I'd rather not spend my money. I've seen Sleater-Kinney twice (once with Pearl Jam, once headlining at a college nearby), don't really care about seeing Wilco, and didn't feel like paying so much to basically just see the Flaming Lips.

My cousin went and said it was freakin incredible. He had never seen the Flaming Lips and he was totally blown away. He wasn't impressed by Sleater-Kinney, although he had never heard of them before.
