I hate reading a thread and not knowing what the hell you guys are talking about. Would someone please clue me in.
It's a guitar playing thing. Hard to explain.
A natural harmonic is made by tapping directly on a fret and releasing whilst you pluck the string. The result is a ringing, light, etheral sounding note that cotinues to ring long after you stop fretting it. You hear it in lots of music (Jeremy intro is probably a good example if you don't know what I mean). They are most commonly played at the 12th (an octave above the open string). They are easiest to play here, but can also be played at any fret (other common frets are 5, 7, . I believe a harmonic (at least at the twelfth fret) is usually 2 octaves above the fretted note.
Artificial harmonics are made by fretting a note and then plucking the harmonic 12 frets (an octave) above the fretted note. Example: If your fingering the third fret, the articifal harmonic would be at the fifteenth fret.
I hope that made sense, it is rather hard to explain without having someone show you it on a guitar. Listen to the Jeremy intro, you can't miss it.

You don't HAVE to be 12 frets above the fretted note, do you? I use the tip of my finger slightly extended beyond the plectrum and just play in my normal position to get artificial harmonics (through trial and error). At least, that's what I thought what I'm doing was called!

Isnt that the guitar effect that the Smashing Pumpkins use on the song Zero. That would definitely be the best use of that technique I have ever heard.
