Does anyone know offhand what PJ songs use natural harmonics in them? and where 'bouts in the song they appear?

Yellow Ledbetter (intro)
Brain of J (Stone verse section)
Thin Air instrumental break.

Jeff does lots in Ten - can't be precise atm.

Hmm thats all I can think of at the
moment.

Indifference (Jeff on bass)
Jeremy intro
Yellow Ledbetter (once in the first verse, twice in outtro)
Get Right intro

The brain of J verse stone is just using wah, not harmonics.
Thin Air is also just straight notes, not natural harmonics.

Yeah, it's something like:
e
B
G
D-----------7----- 5 ---- <12>-------
A 0-5h7-0--- 0-------------------<12>
E

<12> being natural harmonics at the 12th fret.

haha what a goofy question....i know mike uses artificial harmonics in mankind...and everyone has named all the rest i can think of for naturals. i know stone does it a lot to keep the rythm.

My bad, you're right.

I had worked them out as harmonics and sound great like that, but on record they are not harmonics.

It's a guitar playing thing. Hard to explain.

A natural harmonic is made by tapping directly on a fret and releasing whilst you pluck the string. The result is a ringing, light, etheral sounding note that cotinues to ring long after you stop fretting it. You hear it in lots of music (Jeremy intro is probably a good example if you don't know what I mean). They are most commonly played at the 12th (an octave above the open string). They are easiest to play here, but can also be played at any fret (other common frets are 5, 7, 8). I believe a harmonic (at least at the twelfth fret) is usually 2 octaves above the fretted note.

Artificial harmonics are made by fretting a note and then plucking the harmonic 12 frets (an octave) above the fretted note. Example: If your fingering the third fret, the articifal harmonic would be at the fifteenth fret.

I hope that made sense, it is rather hard to explain without having someone show you it on a guitar. Listen to the Jeremy intro, you can't miss it.

Thanks, I know exactly what you are talking about but didnt know the official name. I actually play guitar a bit and have tried to do that on occasion.

usually during the solo of Immortality, Mike throws in a few... at least he did live back on the '95 tour. Check SPR '95. Best version EVER!

Also in most live corduroy performances just before the intro riff is played before the solo, mike/stone throws in some harmonics too.

Check out Led Zeppelin - Dazed and Confused. Page plays natural harmonics and also fiddles with the machine heads to alter the pitch.

You don't HAVE to be 12 frets above the fretted note, do you? I use the tip of my finger slightly extended beyond the plectrum and just play in my normal position to get artificial harmonics (through trial and error). At least, that's what I thought what I'm doing was called!

Isnt that the guitar effect that the Smashing Pumpkins use on the song Zero. That would definitely be the best use of that technique I have ever heard.

No, they're just playing a higher note after the main riff... it's not a harmonic.
