These fellas don't get talked about enough here. I was surprised to see them included in the top 100 artists, but I'm glad they were since they got my vote. I think they have one of the best catalogues of any band in the late sixties, and besides The Who and maybe The Beatles, they are my favorite british invasion band. This is one of those bands that (barring some 3 or 4 songs) goes completely ignored by classic rock radio (at least around here). I remember explaining to my friend that they are a truly great band, and he refused to believe me. I made him a mix and he took his words back. He loves them now.
I know there are fans out there somewhere. Let's hear from ya.
I gave my Dad a mix with the Decemberists on it, he said they sounded like the Kinks. I believe the song was July, July.
Hmm...that's something I never thought about, but now that I am, I could understand the comparison. Especially with the specific time period I'm tlaking about.
the kinks are great. i'd personally rank them above the who. i don't have any albums but only individual songs and one of the various greatest hits comps.
some of my favorite songs:
till the end of the day
waterloo sunset
lola
set me free
victoria
sunny afternoon
dead end street
all day and all of the night
tired of waiting for you
village green preservation society
you really got me
shangri-la
where have all the good times gone

You gotta try out some of the stuff I have pictured. Particularly 'Village Green' and 'Something Else.' They are my two favorites anyway. Like The Who, they were a great singles band, but a much better album band.
I'm a Who nuthugger. It's hard for me to rank any rock band except Pearl Jam aobve them.

Everyone likes the Kinks, they're that sort of band. Not liking them would be like not liking baby elephants.

ALl I have is Odessey and Oracle (do they even have another fully realized album?) and it is a 5 star record if you ask me. I think their vocal harmonies, and perhaps some of their arrangments could rival The Beach Boys.

agreed on the harmonies. better harmonies than the beatles imo.

for the people who dig the kinks, i IMPLORE you to check out the easybeats. their stuff in 65-66 is all superb, in a similar vein to these guys, and to a lesser extent the early beatles/zombies sound. god they were great.
