Probably the most underrated of the 90s and beyond...

Mark Oliver Everett (better known as E)
Image

There isn't too much that The Eels have done that I don't really enjoy. His lyrics are great - he kind of reminds me of a darker Warren Zevon. I also like the overall orchestration and atmosphere of his music. Very chill.

Fans?

I'm his fan. I just listened to Beautiful Freak, the album.

Eh. I like Electro-Shock Blues, but I don't quite think it's a masterpiece.

i've heard very little of the eels, but everything i've heard, i've enjoyed.

you should check out their last album, blinking lights. i dont think its their best, but i think it shows definitely what kind of song writer E is. there are a handfull of amazing stand out tracks, though i enjoy every song.

When I clicked this thread I thought it'd be about Nick Drake.

It's a tough call. I own everything the Eels have put out. On one hand he's got some incredible songs and a style all to his own. But i will say, a lot of his songs sound the same and they drag a bit.

So, i love what he has done so far, but i still think he should expand his sound a bit.

I think he gets about as much credit as he deserves. Like Sonic Youth, he will always have label support to put out whatever record he feels like making. I think thats pretty ideal.

I guess there aren't too many people who really dig his style.

"P.S. You Rock My World," is a song that just seems to put life in perspective. There really aren't too many songs that can accurately pull off that theme, if you ask me.

i don't know how the album doesn't grab anyone right away with "elizabeth on the bathroom floor" and "going to your funeral"

with some brutally honest lyricism about his sisters suicide and funeral. the line "my name's elizabeth. my life is shit and piss" was taken from her diary after her suicide

then a couple tracks later we hear "3 speed" which poetically shows how she was still a lost child having trouble understanding the world around her

i think that album is amazing to begin with but if you fallow the story it tells its absolutely mesmerizing and heartbreaking. it's so real.

i'm a fan of everything he does.
