Let Me Sleep

Cold wind blows on the soles of my feet
Heaven knows nothing of me
I'm lost, nowhere to go
Oh when i was a kid, oh how magic it seemed
Oh please let me sleep, it's christmas time

Flowered winds was where i lived
Thought you burned, not froze for your sins
Th i'm so tired and cold
Oh when i was a kid, oh how magic it seemed
Oh please let me sleep, it's christmas time

Oh when i was a kid, oh how magic it seemed
Oh please let me sleep, it's christmas time
Oh oh when i...if i was a kid, oh how magic it seemed
Oh please let me dream, it's christmas time

Do you remember while growing up the electric atmosphere you felt in the weeks preceding Christmas? How in school you didn’t really learn anything but spent the entire week prior to 12/25 playing games and having fun? Not being able to sleep on Christmas Eve in anticipation of the following morning?

Then somewhere over time, that sentiment falls by the wayside as the enchantment yields as you and your responsibilities grow. Let Me Sleep captures this disappointment and reminds us that at one time in our lives, the holiday season could be magical—before adulthood rears its ugly head and drains all the fun from Christmastime. “I’m so tired and cold,” the narrator admits. The thrill is gone.

This is a downer of a Christmas song, but one that can unfortunately ring true; Jingle Bell Rock it certainly is not. The narrator doesn’t feel anything for the holiday anymore as to where he’d rather just sleep right through it. He’s all but given up on it, because he feels like it’s given up on him: “Heaven knows nothing of me.”

Let Me Sleep is a simple little song, but concise does not necessarily mean unrealized. “Thought you burned, not froze for your sins” is probably one of my all time-favorite Ed lyrics because for those of us who endure the bitter wintry chill during the holiday season, it can be quite depressing, especially if you’ve grown indifferent to Christmas. Lord knows I’ve felt this way many times during some frozen Philadelphia Christmas’.

This was the a-side to the band’s first fan club single, and while that version is good (said version also found on Lost Dogs), I prefer the live performance from the 1994 Bridge School show. It’s starker and matches the feeling of the song’s message better than the studio version. If I recall correctly, you can find that mp3 on The Sky I Scrape.

New Year’s Day through Thanksgiving: 3 stars
Remainder of the year: 4 stars

Great post, bro. Very true. This song seriously gives me chills, and you explained why it does better than I ever could.

Christmas is still the shit, but it isn't even close to as cool as it was when you were little. I don't how in the fuck my mom and dad afforded a Nintendo for me and my brothers (actually, I know they didn't because my aunt helped out  ), but seriously...when you're a little kid around Christmas time, it just seems like everything you see, taste and smell is the greatets thing in the world during the month of December.

Hells yeah!! I've been listening to this song the past few days, for obvious reasons.

While I love Drifting, I skip it during the Holidays so that I can hear Strangest Tribe go into Let Me Sleep. Pure love. :heartbeat:

I really loved Christmas when I was a kid, even though my family didn't have a lot of money. It was great spending time with my family (both sides) and enjoying the atmosphere around the day. I've always thought that Christmas was a pretty time in the midwest (minus the ice and slush). There were times when it was like a scene in A Christmas Story. Ralphie wakes up on X-Mas day, looks outside his window and discovers the freshly fallen snow. There were holidays just like that when I was a kid. The sky was gray and everything was covered in white, yet it felt really peaceful and magical.

Oh when I was a kid, oh how magic it seemed

But for the past few years, I've felt like Ebenezer Scrooge. Frank, you described while I feel like that. Some of that has to do with the fact that 97% of my family still lives back in Illinois or Wisconsin. We always used to spend the holiday together, but we haven't for many years. Plus my grandma passed away 3 years ago (in the early part of December) and the holiday hasn't been the same since. Then you have the fact that the weather is always sunny and warm. That kind of takes away from the day, for me at least. I know that there's more to Christmas than presents (which I don't care if I don't get any of) and snow, but the lack of a few things really puts a downer on the day.

oh please let me sleep, it's christmas time

Now that everyone in my family are grown-up, even my cousins, christimas parties are so weird without any kid around, just a bunch of hypocrite adults...And i agree with the lyrics and Mowbs, christmas was so magic back then...maybe in a future where i have kids, i will taste this magic again.

That says it all right there. All I have to add is that I love the version from the Japanese release of Lost Dogs, where Mike starts with "One, two, three, four!" The way he says it, I picture him standing like a robot with a retarded grin on his face.

Best X-mas song.

I always thought this was about a homeless man on x-mas, which was where Eddie's mind was on a few of the early songs (even flow, homeless with bad radio), and that will always be what I picture when I picture the song, but some of that might be that this is the social problem that hits me hardest. Some really great lyrics here. Heaven knows nothing of me is my favorite

great write up frank :)

Yeah, it's about a homeless guy they encountered outside the studio I believe.

Thought you burned, not froze for your sins
I'm so tired and cold

I agree, one of the best lines Ed has written. Thought you went to hell and burned for your sins, not freeze in the dead of winter for them. This also plays into the perception a lot of people have about the homeless, that they are all drug addicts and alcholoics. Because of their sins they are homeless. Great, simple song that is deeper than a lot of people I know realize. THis song is always played on our local station, WBCN, during the holidays.

Excellent job Frank. :)

I give the song 3 stars. Doesn't blow me away, but it's good for what it is.
