COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) -- A fed-up mother had her 12-year-old son arrested for allegedly rummaging through his great-grandmother's things and playing with his Christmas present early.

The mother called police Sunday after learning her son had disobeyed orders and repeatedly taken a Game Boy from its hiding place at his great-grandmother's house next door and played it.

He was arrested on petty larceny charges, taken to the police station in handcuffs and held until his mother picked him up after church. (Watch when the mom plans to give up custody of the boy )

"My grandmother went out of her way to lay away a toy and paid on this thing for months," said the boy's mother, Brandi Ervin. "It was only to teach my son a lesson. He's been going through life doing things ... and getting away with it."

Police did not release the boy's name.

The mother said that her son was found in the last year to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, but that his medicine does not seem to help.

She said he faces an expulsion hearing at his school Wednesday. Rock Hill Police Capt. Mark Bollinger said the boy took a swing at a police officer assigned to the school last month. He has been suspended from school since then.

The boy's case will be presented to Department of Juvenile Justice officials in York County, who will decide what happens to him, Bollinger said. His mother hopes he can attend a program that will finally scare him straight.

"It's not even about the Christmas present," she said. "I only want positive things out of it. ... There's no need for him to act this way. I'd rather call myself than someone else call for him doing something worse than this."

I think the mother should be arrested for wasting tax money and endangering public safety by using the police as her own personal paddle.

i work in the juvy justice field, and it disgusts me how frequent this type of thing is becoming. alot parents are complete cowards that do not want to raise their children or discipline them, and the legal system is playing right along. i just had a client of mine detained at a detention facility for 7 days because he stole a $15 bottle of liquour from his mother. the sad thing is the worthless fucking mom actually called the police when he stole it, my mom would have handled that and never would have even considered calling the police?

as a matter of fact i am dealing with a kid who is in a foster home, tax dollar funded, because the mother said she doesnt have room for him? she works full time and has 2 other children in the home, yet she tells the judge she cant take him because of a lack of space!, so what does the moron judge do? you guessed it, placed him in a foster home? that judge should have told her that is her fucking son, and you cant deny that out of an inconvenience.

i have a million stories that would piss of any sane person. in court last week i saw a family that asked a judge to court order their daughter to an out of home program THAT THEY SAW ON DR. PHIL! the best part is the dumb fucking judge went right along, not knowing anything about the program at all? that judge better hope nothing funny happens consdiering they ordered a child into the custody of a program they had ZERO knowledge of.

If you want to blame the parents for being irresponsible, then you have to blame the whole system along with it, since it allows for enabling them in the first place. The only way these parents can get away with stuff like this, is because the system lets them.

obvioulsy i agree to some degree considering i just blasted the judge and you quoted it, BUT, i know it is trendy to blame society or the "system" but i am still a fan of personal responsiblity and accountability. if my child did the same, and i knew for fact the judge would take the above action, i still would not pursue this course, because i am not a moron that wants someone else to raise my child or discipline them. the funny thing is they are sending her to some far off program to instill the values they failed to do.

i really wish people would stop blaming society, schools, and the "system" for making our kids into celebrity worshipping morons that can barely read and write. if you ask me 100% of the blame falls on the parents.

I certainly will agree that personal responsibility is key. But these things are not disconnected. Society and personal responsibility are all part of the same circle. They both need to be on the same page to get the desired results.

The cops should have told the mother to shut the fuck up, and left.

I don't know that calling the cops was the best thing.

But what SHOULD she do with this little pain in the ass? It seems she has run out of ways to control the little monster.

How about not having gotten the little monster a gift he is undeserving of? If he was this much of a problem, I would have just returned the gift, and told him he was out of luck.
