I have one. It's the first handheld I've ever bought actually, because I was more of a console only guy in the past. I have Mario Kart DS, which is pretty good but would be better if I had a wireless connection set up to play online. I also have Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney which is a kick-ass lawyer/adventure game with plenty of humor.
For $130, it's a pretty good deal and purchase worthy in my opinion.
Check it out, it's a pretty cool game. They also have a doctor game on the DS which is also good, called Trauma Center. You use the touch screen to perform all the medical tasks.

Why not get a PSP instead?
Twice the cost (even more for memory sticks if you want to fully take advantage of it's features) and a vastly different game library are things to consider. It depends on what your looking for really. It's not necessarily a case of one over the other. DS has a lot of quirky games you really won't find on another system while the PSP has more of a 'console on the go' feel to its games.
So far, it's only been announced for Japan, but it's only a matter of time before it hits elsewhere. Personally, I'm sticking with the one I already have, as I don't find the improvements to be enough to warrant a second purchase. However, someone who hasn't bought one yet might appreciate the new design more, and be willing to wait a bit longer for it.

Yeah, I'm gonna wait until the new one comes out. I'm hoping they'll release it with Tetris included. I actually did buy one, but it had a dead pixel on the touch screen. I took it back, but they were sold out by then. Oh well, works out better anyway

I went with a PSP, and really just use it as an emulator for old NES, SNES and Genesis games. Having a few hundred old games wherever you go is nice. I may buy a DS, but I can never justify buying games for handhelds. Unless I'm travelling, they just sit around collecting dust.

That is one thing that kind of sucks with the DS. The emulator scene is very behind. Do you mind pointing me to a website that shows you how to get NES, SNES, and Genesis emulators on the PSP?

Just got mine a couple of weeks ago. Been working so hard lately I haven't really had a chance to buy stuff and trick it out yet. Memory sticks are too $. Where did you get your NES games for it? You mentioned "a few hundred" games. Do you dl onto a stick or did you buy a UMD w/ all games on it?

I think that is the site I used. Be warned though. The newer versions of the PSP are much harder to emulate. I haven't kept up with what has been going on lately, so I am not sure if you can use emulators on them yet or not. Another thing that sucks is that with newer PSP games, they automatically install newer versions of the firmware on the PSP, and those usually will stop your emulators from working, so then you have to wait for the hacker community to figuire out how to get past it. I have the very first version, and just decided to stick with that, so I don't buy newer games. It was just to big of a pain in the ass to to work around everything. I bought Hot Shots, Lumines, and Twisted Metal and that is really all I need. There are just so many fun Genesis and SNES games I never played before that I don't really have the urge to buy new games for it.

You download them onto a memory stick. I think mine is about a gig. Just search for NES Roms on google and you should find tons of sites that have them. There are of course issues with the legality of downloading Roms, so user beware. Look at that link I posted above, it has lots of guides and information, but you will have to find the Roms on your own.
