He says that all they care about is making money and that they don't care about their fans at all. He says, why should their viewpoints count for more than anyone else's? All they do is make music that people wanna hear so they'll buy it. This is his stance. I'm trying to fight it (and am doing a decent job) but I need some more fuel for my argument that PJ gives a great deal about their music/fans/beliefs, a lot more than most other bands. Give me some stuff that will blow him outta the water.

Thanks
Pete

tell him about the fan club and how they treat the members (seniority)

tell him about how much theyve given to charity since theyve started touring

tell him about the carbon project

tell him about No Code and how their lead singles from 1996 on have been anything but mainstream

tell him that ed has never claimed that his viewpoint means more than anybody else's, but he does believe that he should use his position to do as much good as he can

after you do all of this, he still wont be convinced; he cant understand until he knows the things theyve done for the past 15 years, but i'm not gonna type all of that stuff out. and before you think that i'm some sheep you love everything the band does, let me add that i'm a conservative and i voted for bush in 2000 and 2004.

good luck.

ahh for some reason the song "Habit" comes to mind. That's a great song for loser fans. I bet your dad likes and listens to pearl jam? I don't know.. anyways, here's some links for charity organizations. I always felt pearl jam goes above and beyond what normal bands do, but I would not consider them to be better than anyone else.

and the Deep II magazine like mentioned before.

He's wrong to say that all they care about is making money, but their relative exposure for this latest album (and a shit long touring schedule) suggests a little more money wouldn't hurt them. That, and the fact they only did festival dates in the UK.

probably the ticketmaster boycott in 95 and the relatively low price of tickets (along with the fan club seniority stuff) is the best you can do. Also, they released all their ten (and I think vs) foreign singles as cheap 3 dollar domestic singles to make it easier to collect the b-sides

the rest of the stuff is more about artistic integrity than it is the fans. I know as a fan a lot of their lead single choices have pissed me off.

ask him why they are never on the radio?

if they made music to make money and that "people" wanted to hear... wouldn't they be on the radio as much as U2 or Green Day?

Tell him he's just baiting you, and you're not falling for it. Next. I have a relative who just loves to do this--any topic, any time. He's says things specifically targeted to get a rise out of you. It gives him pleasure to see you get hot under the collar. You don't need to blow him out of the water; you need to take the wind out of his sails. :)
