I'm sure this will start an interesting duscussion.

Why can this guy sue or disagree with any (possibly majority view) and others are considered bigots or racial or haters or fundamentalist, etc., etc., etc. (insert your own word) when they stand up for what they believe?


Atheist Sues to Thwart Inauguration Prayer

SAN FRANCISCO - An atheist who sued because he did not want his young daughter exposed to the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance has filed a suit to bar the saying of a prayer at President Bush's inauguration.

Michael Newdow notes that two ministers delivered Christian invocations at Bush's first inaugural ceremony in 2001, and that plans call for a minister to do the same before Bush takes the oath of office Jan. 20.

In a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Newdow says the use of a prayer is unconstitutional. The case is tentatively scheduled Jan. 14.

Last year, the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals tossed the same lawsuit, saying Newdow did not suffer "a sufficiently concrete and specific injury." But the decision did not bar him from filing the challenge in a different circuit.

Newdow is best known for trying to remove "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance.

He won that case more than two years ago before a federal appeals court, which said it was an unconstitutional blending of church and state for public school students to pledge to God.

In June, however, the Supreme Court said Newdow could not lawfully sue because he did not have custody of his elementary school-aged daughter, on whose behalf he sued, and because the girl's mother objected to the suit.

No one is making Newdow do anything. He's trying to prevent Bush from exercising his own right to pledge to God. If you want to be so enlightened and tolerant you'd better let other people have their cake too.

This guy's an ass that just wants everyone to live the way he believes they should.

Actually, I think that while he may be an ass(I don't know him personally), he has every right to voice his opposition, and wants to keep religion out of government. I thought that's the way it's supposed to be.

Free to not pray.

But NOT free to force others to pray or not to pray.

It's Bush's inauguration right? If he wants a prayer read, is that really a problem?

Remember, his other suit was tossed out because he had no legal ground to sue AND his daughter is a practicing Christian. He used his daughter for his own political purpose. He's an ass.

The God I believe in doesn't love warmongers like Bush anyway, so it's all a moot point. Pray away Georgie, it ain't gonna save you come judgement day!

Yes this guy is an ass and is wrong in this situation. But if there was noone to challenge the fact that our government ignores the separation of church and state, it's my opinion that we would be in a much worse situation than we already are. I basically want this guy to loose his lawsuit, but I don't want him to stop trying.

I'm glad people are out there fighting. If leftists just rolled over, we'd all be forced to pray in schools, forced to go church, taught creationism and have "god is on our side" propaganda forced down our throats.

I, in general, wish prayer was a more private thing, but I respect George W. Bush's wishes. If he wants to do this, it's fine. Not a big deal. Free to listen to words. Free to not listen to words. Free to read posts. Free not to read posts. Freedom is perhaps a matter of the choice to or not to.
