Unidentifiable gas leak in Manhattan, reaching over to NJ, permeating the air- In midtown, the smell is very strong; but our beloved mayor says it's not dangerous- still no information on the source of the leak

What makes me is the fact that the gov't says, we don't know what it is or what is causing it... but its not dangerous. How do they know?

exactly what I thought- Bloomberg says he's "confident" it's not dangerous, because gas detectors aren't showing "significant" levels, but cannot detect location of leak
It stank pretty good downtown this morning getting off the subway (and on the subway, but that's another story), was just out for lunch and didn't notice it so much. Hopefully it is/was harmless...

They probably know its not dangerous because they have taken air samples and had them analysed. Although I would have thought this would give them some idea as to what is causing it.
