SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A woman who competed in a radio station’s contest to see how much water she could drink without going to the bathroom died of water intoxication, the coroner’s office said Saturday.
Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead Friday in her suburban Rancho Cordova home hours after taking part in the “Hold Your Wee for a Wii†contest in which KDND 107.9 promised a Nintendo Wii video game system for the winner.
“She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad,†said Laura Rios, one of Strange’s co-workers at Radiological Associates of Sacramento. “She was crying and that was the last that anyone had heard from her.†Story continues below ↓ advertisement Click Here!
It was not immediately know how much water Strange consumed.
A preliminary investigation found evidence “consistent with a water intoxication death,†said assistant Coroner Ed Smith.
John Geary, vice president and marketing manager for Entercom Sacramento, the station’s owner, said station personnel were stunned when they heard of Strange’s death.
“We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred,†he said.
Initially, contestants were handed eight-ounce bottles of water to drink every 15 minutes.
“They were small little half-pint bottles, so we thought it was going to be easy,†said fellow contestant James Ybarra of Woodland. “They told us if you don’t feel like you can do this, don’t put your health at risk.â€
Ybarra said he quit after drinking five bottles. “My bladder couldn’t handle it anymore,†he added.
After he quit, he said, the remaining contestants, including Strange, were given even bigger bottles to drink.

I read this today. I wonder if the radio station can be held liable. They obviously had knowledge that this was dangerous, but did they actually inform participants of the potential harm? How many of you honestly knew this was possible?

the article i read about this story stated all contestants were told if they thought they were drinking too much and they felt ill, not to put their lives at risk

I read the same thing. But the question is whether or not they made it clear that drinking too much water could kill you, not just make you ill. Anyway, I guess we'll find out in the next day or so.

Yup. Dangerously low salt content. Learned about this in 9th grade high school science.

This makes me glad I live in a country where there are public toilets that don't charge.

You do mate. You just don't live in London.
Did she win the wii?
I've always wondered about that, whether it's a London or not thing or a centre or not thing. I'm from Holloway and don't know what it's like in Central London for public toilets despite the amount of times I've been there. There's Pool Meadow in Coventry and one I know of in Birmingham City Centre. I don't think there's one in Nuneaton though there is Debenhams Wetherspoons anywhere are quite easy to go to the toilet in without buying anything. Egypt on the other hand is a nightmare. Not sure where the prize ended up.

It doesn't matter if the people at the station ACTUALLY knew. That information is out there and they SHOULD have known.
I'd sue the fuck out of them.

so if a woman won a car from a contest, and drove it home and died in a horrible car crash, can the station be sued?

Yeah that makes sense.
Let me help you make your point.
"If a woman was asked to drive a new Mustang as fast as she could down a busy street in order to win said car, and she crashed and died, could the station be sued?"

if the station had the contestants sign a waiver form stating the station isnt liable for a person getting ill and or death does this preclude them from being sued. sure you think, i cant die from drinking too much water, but then you do. whos fault is it. the persons who is greedy and wants to win a prize, or the station that says, dont do it if you think you may be sick
and your anology doesnt make sense either, cause a busy street is dangerous even if you drive at normal speeds. these people drinking the water were in a controlled environment
I knew this was possible from frat hazing horror stories before I went to boot camp. Then I went to boot camp.
I honestly can't see how this could happen as such. I mean, I'm a skinny guy and when I was in my hay day I could do ten 12 oz beers without pissing in about two hours time.
In boot camp...Jesus. I still say that of all the shit that they did to us, the water torture was the worst. Especially if you kept yourself hydrated. It got so bad that guys simply stopped hydrating because they knew what they'd face after lunch, or drill in the afternoon.
Seriously, I can't see how this can happen. I think the most I ever did was six canteens. Those, I think, are a quart. And we had to chug. You got 30 seconds to get that canteen down. So how can you possibly die from 8oz every fifteen minutes? We had one guy one night who got caught stealing chow from the chow hall. That guy drank, and drank, and drank. I believe his final count was 13 canteens. Consider that this hurt him so bad that he was puking blood for days. How does that kind of water torture not make you die, but what this woman participated in did?
if you don't know the possible consequences and dangerous of entering a contest, you really shouldn't enter. and even though i thought everyone pretty much knew drinking too much water can be dangerous theradio station should have pointed it out. and since it appears they didn't >>>
