Freeganism is a lifestyle based around the belief that almost all work and monetary exchanges within a capitalist economy contribute to myriad forms of exploitation - worker abuse, animal exploitation, hunger, ecological destruction, mass incarceration, war, inequitable distribution of resources, commodification of women - almost all issues addressed by social, ecological, and animal rights advocacy groups.
They do things like share knowledge and goods, and... forage for food in garbage bins, thus consuming waste.
What do we think?

In all seriousness, I've gone dumpster diving after the other students have moved out in May and gotten some pretty good stuff

The belief that capitalism fosters such things as worker abuse and hunger is absurd. It is not the economic system but rather the participants. Look at the corruption that was evident in the former Soviet Union's socialist paradise.

just for the record, i'm not advocating this, just igniting some debate.

I don't know if there's going to be much debate to ignite. This seems like a pretty miserable way to live life.
heh, yeah. maybe discussion would be a better word than debate. it does raise some interesting questions with regards to our own wasteful lifestyles, though. it's done some good if it at least gets people to think about that and maybe change their habits a bit.

I don't think it's going to have that effect to most people, though. In fact, it might backfire by creating assumptions along the lines of "So THIS is how those wacko environmentalists want us to live our lives?"

But you want to enlighten those ignorant people, don't you?
i've decided that some people are beyond help, and attempting discourse with them is only going to make me shoot up someone's bathroom.

Sounds like it's been a while since you read Long Walk To Freedom.

i'm quite skeptical of how this can be actively practiced. Can anyone reasonably expect anyone to dig thru garbage for food?
On a second note, organic matter such as left over food get absorbed by the soil fairly quickly, in fact contributing to the richness of the soil. It's the polymer that goes into the landfills that's gonna kill us.
