The japanese Mogwai. These guys are awesome. They take longer to build up, but when they do, it fucking crushes you. I think they lack the single brilliance that Mogwai does, but their albums are incredible. It's like an ambient concept album with huge guitars and monumental stacked and layered riffs.
Really good stuff. I recommend One Step More and You Die and Walking Cloud and Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered and the Sun Shined. If you like Mogwai or EITS, at least give our Japanese friends, Mono, a try.

Was browsing last.fm a little and I glanced at the post rock tag. Mono was the 8th band listed. I was pretty impressed. I was under the impression they weren't nearly that well known. I guess they have toured with some "big" names though.
I think the reason I enjoy their stuff so much is because it's a little more straightforward than their other two oft-compared compadres, and even Godspeed to some extent. I'm still early in this CD, so this might be incoherent babbling, but Mono is intense stuff.
The build in these songs is off the charts. Even GSYBE! has trouble keeping up with these shats.
I have mono right now... the virus... not the band. The band is much more enjoyable than the virus.
There is also a European band that goes / went by the name Mono. They had the main song on that crappy remake of of "Great Expectations" with Gweneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawk. I think the name of the song was even called "Life in Mono" or something like than.... I dont know where I'm going with this.

Mono has been my favorite "post rock" band for a couple of years now. It's funny because i've always been under the impression that they were widely known. They will be taking out Worlds End Girlfriend Grails and the Drift on the upcoming tour (not tiny acts as well)
But yeah, i always include them with the heavyweight names like EITS, Do Make, Mogwaii and you know some others.

Mono has definitely gotten much more recognition the past year+. I started listening to them after One More Step and noone else (at least on RM), at least not that I can remember.
I'm glad they are touring with The Drift, but I'm not sure why you think they are "big". I saw them last year and there was about 15 people at the show. It was a great show though.
