so i just bought a dvd of the movie made by a certain ex vice president, but since this guy invented the internet, he's cleverly put copy protection on it (i think. i can't test it at work bc no dvd player). how do i get around this?

use anydvd to get around mr. gore's fancy-pants protection, then use nero to burn the disc (assuming you have a dl-burner and are using dl discs.... i haven't figured out how to split a dl disc with nero yet) - otherwise, i've heard that apollo dvd plus anydvd works well with single-layer burners to split a dl disc between 2 singles and avoid any quality loss.
i would avoid using anydvd for anything other than getting around protection issues - but it seems to work really well for that sole purpose.

I highly recommend RipIt4Me. It's freeware, it's a tiny download, it's updated often, it's easy to use, and it has a great support forum at Digital Digest.

You're very welcome. If you run into any problems getting it set up, post and I'll try to help.

I'm quite interested in this idea of splitting a DL DVD onto two SL DVDs with no quality loss. Please, tell me more.

Apollo DVD copy is able to split a DL disc (or DVD-9) into 2 SL discs (or DVD-5) without losing any quality and while preserving all the menus and special features. Use it with slysoft's anydvd to get around copy protection (if, ahem, you're into that kind of thing...) - It basically detects the layer switch and breaks the copying process at that point, prompts you to enter a blank disc, copies, then prompts for the original disc for the second round of copying.
go here for info http://www.xtodvd.com/dvd_copy.htm
As a caveat, I haven't used this myself since I have a DL burner and use Nero + anydvd for my copying needs, but I used to use a similar program by 3-2-1 Software called DvdXCopy Gold (which was very solid and consistently performed well on my former laptop). After a heafty lawsuit shut 3-2-1 down, it's hard to come by the actual xcopy program anymore (some shitty newer versions are floating around, but they either force you to chose compression or DL copy and seem to be very unstable). I gave a friend of mine the Apollo + anydvd combo and he's been burning like crazy without any errors, so I have at least an indirect voucher that it works. Both programs were floating around on oink or demonoid a few months ago...
I hope that makes some sense... If you have any more questions, send me a pm

Yep. You'll need DVD Decrypter, FixVTS (unless you use the RipIt4Me installer, which includes FixVTS), and probably DVD Shrink, too. They're all freeware and the best at what they do.

RipIt4Me handles cracking the copy protection and imports the correct settings into DVD Decrypter for ripping and FixVTS for cleanup/compliance. You then have the option of automatically opening the finished rip in DVD Shrink, where you can remove unwanted audio streams or subtitles, apply extra compression to menus & bonus features, and output an image that you can then burn to a single layer DVD.

DVD Decrypter
FixVTS
DVD Shrink

I'm sure all that sounds much more complicated than it actually is. Once you've got everything installed and you give RipIt4Me the paths to the other programs, the only things you'll really have to interact directly with will be RI4M & Shrink (or whatever other shrinking or reauthoring prog you decide to use), and they're both pretty user-friendly, I think.

Decrypter and Shrink are both no longer being developed and can't crack many discs from the last year or so on their own.
