I searched for our old argue-fest about this movie, but its nowhere to be found.
I just watched this movie again on DVD, and I continue to assert its brilliance. There are so many levels to enjoy it on. I really enjoyed how the themes of love, pain, and things people do to protect their loved ones from pain were explored in the movie. Each of those themes is handled in different ways between Lucius and Ivy, Noah and Ivy, Ivy and Kitty, and the Elders and the people of the village.
I don't understand most of the complaints with this movie. I don't think this movie is anything like M. Night's other flicks, so I can't empathize with the "one trick pony" compaint. Just 'cause it has a couple of surprises doesn't mean it is the same kind of movie. My only complaint is the awkwardness of the dialogue in the first half of the film. I thought they could have pulled that off better. But as for the use of that dialogue, if we want to get into spoilers, I understand and appreciate its use.
I think the emotional payoffs are huge in this movie, and I would recommend it to anyone. Just don't expect a horror movie, which I couldn't give a damn about anyway, like The Ring. Although the marketing made it look like the point of the film is to scare the audience, it is really just a drama with a couple of tense moments thrown in for good measure.
BTW, did anyone else realize that Kitty in The Village is also Kitty in Arrested Development. More AD genius.
absolute piece of shit. has to be one of the worst and most boring movies ever.
So...you were bored? Do you enjoy dramas or just flicks with lots of tits and explosions?
I'm trying to understand the psyche of The Village-haters.
you got me buddy. im a lowlife ignorant dumbass and you are of such high motion picture intelligence, far superior to me.
I along with millions of other people think this movie is dog shit.
Hey, I'm not bitter, nor do I think I'm above you. It was an honest question. I really wanna know what you don't like about it. So calm down and use your words.

First, I'll say that I'm a big Night fan. I love the way he's brought back the "Hitchcockian, theater of the mind" aspect to suspense filmmaking. "Signs" was great.
The problem with the Village was, it was hyped as the next suspense thriller, brought by the same team that gave you 6th Sense, Signs, etc. Now, you may say that was marketing's fault. But no way, Night is fully involved with all the marketing and everything else. To me, it was a just a bait and switch scam. I went in expecting a thriller and left trying to figure out how and why this period drama wasn't billed as such. And the "twist" was just....well, boring.
BUT!!!...it was done really well. The story is there (and a smart one at that). The performances were really good, especially Leaf Phoenix's. Ron Howard's daughter even did well, despite the unfair nepotism involved (Don't even get me sarted that). Anyway, I think people despise this movie because they feel cheated, and rightfully so.

I'd give it an A+ if the scene revealing what the monsters were had been moved to after her confrontation with Adrien Brody in the woods. As it is currently edited, I give it a C-.

yeah that was just dumb
i figured it'd be a thrilling, somewhat scary movie as well...was i disappointed that it wasn't? not all that much because i don't get scared easily anyway...but i found the movie enjoyable when i saw it in the theater and i'd watch it again

Really? I dig the sequencing of that part.
SPOILERS AHEAD.
He reveals the truth about the monsters to Ivy, but then when she's out in the woods you get the voiceover of, "There were rumors of monsters in these woods." Other people might not have fallen for it, but I thought it just messed with the audience enough to make you think, "Wait a second maybe those are real," especially when you look at the situation through Ivy's eyes (lack of vision included).

Maybe if they hadn't revealed Brody's escape, I'd agree with that. But no.

I was bored for one reason. I guessed the two twists 15 minutes into the movie.
i hate to say but it sounds like you only have your self to blame for not likeing it then, if you go in trying to figure out the twists then im sure its can become easy to guess. but if you wanted to enjoy the movie then you should have sat back and watched IMO
