Sad day in Celts history.
BREAKING NEWS: Former Celtics guard Dennis Johnson died today at age 52, Celtics executive director of basketball operations Danny Ainge confirmed to the Globe. The Austin American-Statesman is reporting on its website that Johnson fell ill at the Austin Convention Center in Texas this afternoon. Johnson, an NBA Hall of Fame guard who played on championship teams with Ainge, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish in the 1980s, was the coach of the Austin Toros, a team in the NBA Development League with an affiliation to the Celtics. --Developing

We'll never forget Bird's steal and your layup against the Pistons in 1987.

DJ was the man.

He was one of my favorite players.

That's sad news.

my dad used to always say he was the ugliest player in the league. I hated the celtics but always respected their squad.

Always ashame when someone dies (well, usually, and in this case).

Yeh, that was awesome. DJ was the perfect general for that great(est ever?) side.

This is very sad news.

Hey man - I live in Australia and have done all my life - we've only gotten close-to-live coverage of the NBA in the last 7 years, and that's only if you go with cable! I reckon I did allright for a call that was made 20 years ago!

The actual call I believe was:

"..aaaand...theres' a steal by Bird...underneath to DJ...LAYS IT IN!!!"

How's that? :?

I only pointed it out because it seems you confused it with this one:

"havlicek stole the ball!"

i'll never forget watching that game. It was all so -- for lack of a better word -- unbelievable. Bird came out of nowhere, took it and DJ hit an incredible lay-up to win that game. We were all shocked, looking at eachother like "did that just REALLY happen?"

DJ was awesome. He'll be missed.

That's one of my earliest sports memories. That and the Pats getting crushed by the Bears
