Has Pearl jam become a glorified bar band? Please give me a minute to make some points.

1. The way they play a song or arrange a song does not really change from tour to tour. Everything off of Ten and Vs. still sound the same today as they did 15 years ago. These songs have never gone under a big re-working.

2. Tours never adopt the sound of the new album. In fact with Pearl Jam it works the other way round. New songs are sonically changed to fit with the previous tours live sound. Case in point the Binaural tour. Old songs were not updated to the Binaural sound.

3. They see to play more and more covers every tour.

4. When was the last time you came home from a Pearl Jam show and were amazed by a song arrangement.

I'll contrast this to the favorite whipping boy on this board, U2.

Songs go under huge changes each tour. On the Vertigo tour Original of the Species was played as piano driven song on some legs and a full band and string driven song on other legs. Running To Stand Still is a guitar song on the Achtung baby tour, then a piano ballad on the Vertigo tour.

You hear a bootleg and you can nearly always tell which tour it was from as songs are refreshed to match the tour's sound.

Arrangements that have amazed me include; Running to Stand Still as a piano ballad, Walk On does as an duet with just Bono and acoustic guitar.

Food for thought anyways.

You're right. U2 is the greatest band in the world, and Pearl Jam are just complacent idiots.

You've got a really good point, especially compared to U2 who do re-arrange their songs quite a bit from tour to tour.

What you don't get from a U2 tour though is a wide variety of songs from all their albums. They'll break out a couple rarities here and there, but they certainly don't compare to the sheer # of different songs PJ plays on a tour.

It would be cool to hear PJ re-arrange some of their classics, like what they did with Jeremy and Corduroy.

Wow, a few tags and a new intro. Changes to the setlis every night just gives them something else in common with your average bar band.

Bottom line, I have been to 16 PJ shows and have only left two of them thinking they were average or worse. All of the above may be true, but they leave their blood and bones on the stage almost every night.

I'll keep going back to Pearl Jam shows because they are so good, and they pull out something rare every night. I'll have a great time every time I go, and get to party with some great people.

I just think though of the wasted opportunity after Binaural and not doing a Binaural sounding tour.

If you think Even Flow sounds the same now as the shows from the 91 and 92 era you are really hard of hearing.

Garden was rearranged in 2000 and again in 2006.

They played MUCH less covers in 2006 than in 2003.

I agree with a lot but I think the differences are just more subtle. Listen carefully and you'll find them
And there is one song I would not mind calling 'dance'. I think it's funny how so many people love the song while they keep saying they hate dance/techno music.
