I remember liking the some of the music in the movie "Pump Up The Volume" but when I bought the CD it was all badly remixed and really sucked

In general I like soundtracks that are real soundtracks, ones that were actually composed for the movie. Soundtracks with songs grabbed off the radio or whatever are almost always sub-par, even when they have awesome stuff like Mogwai, Mum, or EITS.

Some of my favorites are:

Zidane: 21st Century Portrait
Lord of the Rings
The Fountain
Requiem for a Dream
Saving Private Ryan

iirc the soundtrack for The Departed was pretty good too
