Downloaded this last night not expecting much, but am really digging it so far. Already made a post in the best albums of 2007 - they sound kind of like the more noisey/ethereal/ambient sides of Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, and Sonic Youth, but I also detect post-punk bands like Joy Division, and more recent house/techno inspired acts like !!! and LCD Soundsystem. Definitely nicely produced and very accessible as well.

I'm starting to enjoy this record more and more after each listen. "Strange Lights" is a brutal single (plus, I love that video), "Cryptograms" is a skillfull blend of a variety of influences, "Octet" is a nice instrumental piece reminding me a lot of the hypnotic balance in the Spacemen 3 records. It certainly has some lower points, but it's still a very solid record.

I'm not sure if it's my favorite, but it's definitely in the top tier.

I gave this a listen not knowing anything about it and I hated it.

All of them? It's hard to say. Check this quote from Bradford Cox of Deerhunter:

Quote:
I use this thing, a delay pedal called the DigiTech DigiDelay. I use it for everything. If I had to have one [instrument] to make music with, it would be that. I've used it on every vocal I've ever done. It's also the source of a lot of sounds on our record that people didn't realize-- the entire first track ["Intro"] is done on one. That's just my voice; there's no keyboards on the majority of that track. There's one keyboard part at the end, but that's it. All the loops are my voice. And a lot of the sounds on "Octet" are my voice looped through this thing. It has a really cool additive way of making loops. Everybody in Deerhunter has one. Every single person in the band, after seeing me use it, was like, "I have to have one of those." It's the one thing we all have in common.

About half the songs have lyrics, I think.

I know this is gonna sound like a cliché but Cryptograms is one of those albums that needs to listened all the way thru to really value the songs and see how they all connect so well with each other. This is my new favorite headphones album. Give it a shot.

Just finished listening to the Fluorescent Grey EP. My first impression is that it's every bit as awesome as Cryptograms, if not more awesomer.

Holy shit. I love these songs. I'm starting to really love this band. I just hope their next album is as good as this EP.

I listened to Deerhunter's '05 debut, Turn It Up Faggot, a little while ago. It's not bad. The tracks "Oceans" and "Death Drag", if I recall correctly, were standouts on my first run-through.
