I want to know the same thing. I'm also looking for a nice new turntable.

You can get a nice one if you like but I bought a pioneer for $150 about 8 years ago and it works just fine still. Its got a cheap ass little belt drive and works great.

I bought an old Technics SL-D30 Direct Drive for my vinyl. Spent about 50 bucks on the turntable and 50 on a new needle. Pure bliss. :D

Bought mine(Technics) at a flea market for $3. Spent $12 on the stylus :D Works like a charm. Has a cool pilot lamp as well.

My parents gave me their old Turntable. A Bang and Olufsen original chrome from the 60's. Absolutely amazing.

Direct drive uses a magnet to make the record spin where a belt drive is just that, belt driven. Belts wear out and then you have to buy new ones so that is always a consideration along with the quality of stylus you can buy to compliment your turntable. There are also two types of stylus - Magnetic and Ceramic. Magnetic stylus turntables need the actual phono input on your amplifier where the Ceramics only need a regular input like CD or Tape decks. I have a Technics turntable with Direct Drive. The auto return doesn't work right now which is a real pain in the ass, my dad has my other turntable that works right.

I just bought a Audio Tech APl50......$90 in Circuit City

Works good....if i want i can put a Better Needle in it?
How can i improve the sound?
If so where can i find this stuff at?

It has a PRE-AMP so i dont need a PHONO input
Just wondering, does it sound better with a PHONO input or without it?

My Reciever is 100 Watts..... my Speakers are OLD (big) Sanyo BASS REFLEX, also 100 watts each

Thanks
