You're dvd burner is connected through IDE controller. It's how your pc talks to the burner. During a bad burn, the controller can default to PIO mode. You want to be in DMA mode.
I'm assuming you have XP.
To do this:
Go My computer>view system information>hardware tab>device manager
Click on IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
Select your primary and click uninstall.
Reboot.
When it comes back up XP will automatically recognize the burner and reinstall the drivers.
Your burner should then act normally. The same thing happens to me from time to time and these are the steps I take to remedy.
