It is sadly time for a new machine, but Bill-do and the rest of the fucks at Microshaft have made it all but impossible to get a new machine without Vista. I suppose I can learn to live with that fact, but am I going to have problems replacing various programs like DVDecryptor or FLAC or MKW shn, because if I remember correctly, all those programs ran off the XP platform.

Just buy a bare bones machine and you could load whatever OS you wanted. That way you could also keep any of the parts from your old machine that might still be valuable... RAM, DVD burner etc.

I haven't heard anything specific about those programs NOT running on Vista. Usually MS makes their OS reverse compatible for at least the last OS or two, so those programs should work.

Huh?
MS doesn't make anything backwards compatible. It's up to the software companies to make sure their products work on the new OS.
Yeah, so I bought a notebook a month or so ago, and I won't be running any of those on this machine, that's what my desktop is for. That being said. I basically hate vista.

Whatever you want to call it. I can count the number of programs that I've had fail on a new Windows OS on one hand, and I've gone from Win 95 to 98 to ME to XP. They almost always work on the next OS. Now, two OSs in the future, they might not...

Well sure, because up until Vista, MS hadn't changed the kernel in years. Windows 95 was a GUI on top of 3.11; 98 was mostly networking improvements among other updates to 95; ME was...well, let's not talk about ME.
2000 was an upgrade of NT; XP was a marriage of NT and 98; Server 2003 was built on the same kernel as XP, I believe, but had more in common with 2000 Advanced Server than 2000 Workstation.
MS hasn't done a lot of changing to the internals in forever until now with Vista.

Well, fuck vista then.

Vista includes application shims which allow for extensive compatibility and a XP "emulation" mode for unlisted apps. If you really must use something, then just run XP in a VirtualPC. Problem solved.
I'm no fan of MS, but Vista is pretty goddamn amazing. Don't bash it until you've tried for couple of weeks. You might be pleasently surpirsed.

I have a confession to make.
I'm still using ME. It came with my bundle, and I never bothered to change it.
I'm gonna do it now. ME doesn't seem to recognise the new camera I got .

So, people, what do you say? XP or Vista?
If your system came with ME, it's probably too old to run Vista. Vista is, for some ridiculous reason, written in VB so it has relatively high system requirements. I would guess XP is a better choice for you. You can get an OEM version for >$40 online if you buy a hard disk with it. Total is usually >$100.

I just bought a brand new laptop about two month before vista came out. So basically what you guys are saying is that I shouldn't upgrade just yet, or at all???

when able to, its always best to wait about a year on a new OS, let the bugs get worked out and applications tuned to it
