I got an e-mail saying I'd received a private message and clicked on the link like always and logged in, only to find that there was nothing in my inbox. WTF?

I think it could happen if the one sending you the PM deleted it before you read it.
When you send PMs they end up in your outbox, and stay there until the addressee reads them. But I think that if you delete the PM before the addressee reads it, there will be a situtaion like yours.
