Make Yourself

words and music by Incubus

If I hadnt made me, I wouldve been made somehow
If I hadnt assembled myself, Id have fallen apart by now
If I hadnt made me, Id be more inclined to bow
Powers that be, would have swallowed me up
But thats more than I can allow

Bow, aww yeah

If you let them make you, theyll make you paper mache
At a distance youre strong, until the wind comes
Then you crumble and blow away
If you let them fuck you, there will be no fore-play
Rest assured, theyll screw you complete
Til your ass is blue and gray

You should make amends with you
If only for better health, better health
But if you really want to live
Why not try, and make yourself

Make yourself
Make yourself

If I hadnt made me, Id have fallen apart by now
I wont let them make me, its more than I can allow
So when I make me, I wont be paper maiche
And if I fuck me, Ill fuck me my own way

Pow, fuck me in my own way
Pow, fuck me in my own way
Pow, fuck me in my own way
Fuck me in my own way

You should make amends with you
If only for better health, better health
But if you really want to live
Why not try, and make yourself

Make yourself
Make yourself
Make yourself
Make yourself

Music with passion kicks my ass. There's something about people giving their all to a song that's really compelling. Since most of us are big PJ fans, or at least enjoy other bands with similar levels of passion for their work, we can all probably appreciate that.

But it gets better. Loud rock music kicks my ass too. I love riffy, distorted guitar playing, kick ass bass and a funky beat. Incubus deliver that perfectly here, with the passion that makes it truly authentic.

So far, so good. Passionate, kick ass rock music. The pulse of the simple riff just drags you along with, the drums do the same, with fantastic 5-string bass keeping it tightly grooving along. Musically, it's what you could ask for in a rock song. Add in some very thoughtful work on the decks and effects and you have an intelligence in composition unmatched by any band in their genre.

What could make a great rock song better? Lyrics that typify, perhaps, some of the things that rock music should stand for. Make Yourself is one of the standout tracks on the album of the same name, and the rest of the songs carry similar themes - individuality, shaping yourself, not doing things just because other people do, and living with passion.

Brandon Boyd is a pretty good lyricist. Everyone who's recorded a couple of albums throws out a dud line here and there, but on Make Yourself he was on fire. And his delivery (comparisons with Eddie abound here) takes it to the next leve. He's fortunate to have such a talented group of musicians around him, and he makes full use of them, soaring his vocals over the top of Mike's flawless choruses, or spitting out his words staccato-style on Jose's beat. The lyrics are simple, but pretty powerful by the time they leap from the page to your ears.

But that's all a wee bit too much analysis of what is, really, a simple rock song that kicks some ass. So rather than read anymore into it, enjoy the feeling:

Great song. Incubus in the midst of their prime. The sad thing is that this album was the start of the Incubus we know today. Songs like drive led the way for pop music whores to allow the band to get a little lax in their writing.

This song live is amazing. Incubus is one of the few bands that has made just rock out and lose it.

Incubus in the midst of their prime= S.C.I.E.N.C.E.

Name me a better incubus song than Favorite Things.

I don't believe in Incubus in their prime because they've been a great band in each one of their musical stages. Some people like the technical funk-metal of Science, others like the indie pop of the newer material.

Make Yourself was a good example of Incubus being blown into the mainstream. A very popular song in late high school which grabbed the attention of many who were unfamiliar with them. There's really not much else to say about this. A solid Incubus song.

New Skin.

But yeah, I really like this song. Reminds me of a really good time in my life, there's not a hell of a lot too intricate to the lyrics but it's a damn good time. One of those songs if you don't think too much about, it's really enjoyable. It is stuck between two of my most disliked tracks though...

I just can't get into incubus. I feel like I should like them since they are obvious heirs to so much of the music I love, and they are clearly heads and shoulders above their contemporary peers (but that could still be damning with feint praise).

But i listen to this song and I just hear formula. There isn't anything about it that grabs me. I don't think I could pick this music out of a lineup. For better or worse you can usually tell if you're listening to a soundgarden song, a screaming trees song, a pumpkins song, etc, but this was just kind of featureless. Grunge 101.

And in the same vein Brandon Boyd just sounds utterly generic. Great singers usually have an instnatly recognizable voice, or some kind of feature to it that makes it stand out. This feels like it is all jerry cantrell without any layne staley to accent it. A straight man with no punchline. There was a nice scream at the end, but as McParadigm said quite nicely in some other thread, it's the kind of scream you get when someone wants to sound like they have passion without anything really invested in it. it was a scream for screamings sake.

Lyrically I wasn't too impressed either. The line stuzzo quoted in the thread title was pretty striking, but its overused in the song. It works great once but then constant repetition (in the 'fuck me in my own way') ends up feeling a little junvenille in the end--shock value instead of good writing

But it sounds like I'm in the minority here :)

Definitely the best song on this record. Vitamin being a close second.

I got into Science at Make Yourself at the same time (1999). I was at military school at the time, so we didn't have many off-campus breaks. When we did, I would fire up New Skin and totally let loose. This reminds me of playing ball with my friends on summer afternoons.

SCIENCE is my favorite Incubus album too.

And Make Yourself is a pretty good song but it's not anything mindblowing. Shoulda picked Vitamin or Redefine.

i used to like these guys, but became disenchanted when they seemed to be changing their sound in order to be more popular. then i lost interest in all of their music altogether, and haven't dusted off their albums in a long while.
maybe i will pop this one on and see how i feel, a few years down the track,

great pic, not their best, but still good.

I beleive all of their albums are pretty solid, its just the singles that are kinda meh.

Good song.

The correct answer to the best song off of SCIENCE is Deep Inside though, maybe Glass.

Good choice, stu. Though it's not my fave song from Make Yourself. I've liked all Incubus albums so far although I have yet to hear the new one. I think the new one will end up being my least favorite even though Morning View is probably my second favorite behind S.C.I.E.N.C.E.
