I was wondering this during the last (failed) rescue. Hasn't technology progressed far enough that the parks department can give people some cheap, little beacon whenever they go up on a mountain or out into the Utah desert? I mean, some fucking clip with a button that the person can press if they get hurt or lost?
They have to be reasonably priced and you could just reuse them like restaurant pagers. It couldn't possibly cost as much as the hundreds of thousands of dollars Oregon spent on that last rescue.
I know the weather is sometimes a factor, but if you've got a GPS beacon you could still pull the person out in like a day.

great idea. most experinced hikers do have gps with them though for risky climbs.

Maybe people shouldn't try to climb 13,000 foot mountains in the winter.
Everyone should probably stick to the safe indoors.
Nothing wrong with heading out into the back country and climbing/skiing mountains in the winter so long as you're properly prepared and possess the necessary skills and knowledge.

They could just require you to have a backcountry permit and to have some kind of locating device similar to the rescue devices that skiiers can wear for avalanche recoveries.
It is really boosh the government would be required to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to find your stupid ass because you didn't have the right experience, equipment, provisions etc and you didn't check the weather report.
honestly if you've got the money to be doing backcountry climbing skiiing etc, you should go ahead and buy your own locating device. The government can chip in on the radio transmitter or gps unit it needs to locate your frozen lifeless corpse.
Another live that could have been saved by my GPS Beacon Loaner System.

Here in Phoenix, we get stories on about a weekly basis starring an elderly person who "wanders out into the desert". It's like the fucking Call of the Wild for the senile or something.

The kid is alive.
EDIT: Another expensive rescue operation that could have been avoided ...
