INDUSTRY NEWS
2007 Waterman's Weekend Dates Set, Honorees Announced

By Press Release

Posted 03.22.2007
The Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) will honor women’s surfing icon Lisa Andersen as Waterman of the Year, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder as Environmentalist of the Year, and North Shore pioneer and surf contest guru Randy Rarick with the Lifetime Achievement Award as part of the association’s annual Waterman’s Weekend environmental fundraiser. Kelly Slater and Layne Beachley will also receive special achievement awards in honor of their record-breaking world championship title victories.

[.....]

Eddie Vedder, perhaps best known for his musical talents, is also a notable force in the world of environmental advocacy. Vedder and his band, Pearl Jam, are active in many environmental causes – most notable to the surf industry are the fights to save Trestles and Hawaii’s North Shore. Vedder supported the Surfrider Foundation by donating $1 from every ticket sold for Pearl Jam’s L.A. shows in 2006 to the Save Trestles campaign through Pearl Jam's Vitalogy Foundation. In addition to the Save Trestles campaign, Vedder and Pearl Jam staged a concert on the North Shore of Hawaii in December 2006 to raise money for the North Shore Community Land Trusts’ “Campaign for Pupukea Paumalu” to help save the North Shore from development.

“Not only is Eddie a talented musician, but a true surfer at heart and his efforts to protect our waves and environment are widely appreciated by the surf industry,” said Paul Naude, chairman of the SIMA Environmental Fund Board of Directors and CEO of Billabong USA. “The battles to save Trestles and Pupukea Paumalu, both part of the industry’s playground, are extremely important to surfers. Eddie has not only supported the fights monetarily, but perhaps more importantly by using his and Pearl Jam’s influence to bring attention to the fights when attention was needed. Eddie rallies behind numerous environmental efforts and practices what he preaches. It is an honor for the surf industry to recognize this diligent environmentalist as SIMA Environmentalist of the Year.”

i honestly never heard of SIMA, so i don't know how prestigious this honor is, but either way i thought it was pretty neat that Eddie is being recognized for his charity work.

good for Ed, but I'm sure there are many people who have done more for the environment over the past year than him.

people have probably worked harder, but I'm sure Ed raised more money than anyone because of all those concerts.

true, but out of all the famous environmentalists out there i'd rather see ed recieve this award as opposed to bono or the fag from green day

I always think it's funny how people just assume they know everything about an individual. Does anyone here know how much Ed has done for the enviroment or has given to charity in the past year? We're filled with assumptions. Yeah, it probably had something to do with his friends, but isn't that the case with most awards?

I think they've done a lot of good for the environment, if not they themselves then just by raising awareness, but I do find it odd that Ed would receive this award. If I'm not mistaken it sounds like this company is based out of Hawaii because a lot of the recipients are from or live in North Shore, Oahu. When I was there a lot of people in the North Shore were a little ticked off with Ed because he decided to stay in the very same resort (Turtle Bay) who's owners are planning to build five new hotels with 3,500 more condos, timeshares, and another resort hotel on the North Shore (right now, IMO, that place is perfect, and they're planning on turning it into another Honolulu) . All this development would drastically affect the nature that Ed is being awarded for trying to save. I think a lot of the locals there are trying to boycott Turtle Bay, so it was a huge upset when people heard he was staying there. That secret concert was also sponsored by Quicksilver, the same company that is looking to run a mom and pop surf shop out of bussiness just so they can have a store right on their property (a very popular big wave surf beach). Another thing that upset the locals, and another reason he might not be so popular around those parts.

Again, I support everything he's doing (has done) for the environment, but I'm just suprised that he'd get an award from there, knowing how strongly most people on that island feel about that resort.
