Clutch have completed recording a new album with a scheduled release date of March 27, 2007. The album, titled From Beale Street to Oblivion, was produced by Joe Barresi (whose credits include The Melvins, Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age and Tool), and will be released on the DRT Entertainment label.
"This is probably the most 'live' album we have recorded," enthuses vocalist Neil Fallon. "We went out for a few weeks, and played the music on the road. So, when we went into the studio, all of us knew exactly what was going to happen — a first for CLUTCH. I don't know why we haven't done it this way all along, it's so much easier. We also recorded the basic tracks directly onto tape. Nothing digital in there at all. We haven't done that since 'The Elephant Riders'. And this record has a few more bluesy elements than has been the case in the past, but nothing so blatant that it could be called alien to what we do.

I'll be getting this as a b-day present for myself.

Picked it up yesterday. Wasn't as good as I was hoping on the first listen but after a couple more spins I'm digging it. They've almost gone pure boogie-blues on this one.

I've had the leak for well over a month and frankly forgot all about it. Judged against their past, I would say this album is as weak as Jam Room. I thought I would be done with them at that point but they came back and rocked my ass with Blast Tyrant and Robot Hive.
I seriously love C!. They are one of the most badass bands I have ever seen live. Clutch, The Elephant Riders, Pure Rock Fury, Blast Tyrant and Robot Hive: Exodous all rank very highly on my favourite albums list. This new one and Jam Room are so boring that they almost become forgettable albums for me. They are like the relative that you don't really like and forget about for 364 days a year. You see them for a day and realize why you block them out for the remaining 364 days.
I'm disappointed but hopefully, they will come back and rock my ass somthing fierce with the next album. I would be very excited to hear them go back to the crazy riffs and slightly heavier sound of the Elephant Riders era. There has not been a single song as cool as The Soapmakers since.

This is not encouraging for me man.

This album is definitely a grower, it doesn't grab you by the balls like Blast Tyrant does, but give it some time and you'll forget you ever questioned its worthiness. Still, even if it doesn't measure up to some of their previous releases, it's about a million times better than the majority of the shit that's released these days.

I think my problem at this point is it's all too mid-tempo and a bit samey.
I do really like The Devil and Me and Electric Worry at this point though.

My problem is that there is nothing new here. They're going down a path that guys from Chicago have been treading for 50-60yrs. I'm all for injecting blues into hard rock. Hell, I grew up listening to blues. That's why I'm so bored with this direction. I found C! when I was getting out of blues as my main musical influence. Now they're going right back to where I started. They are far too complacent in the riff department now and 4 chord songs just don't cut it for me anymore. Neil still hits the ball out of the park on the vocal side but the music just slunks along. I'm sure every song will kick all kinds of ass live but when I want to listen to a C! album, I want to be completely rocked. This one does not do that.
And for the record, I've found that every C! album since Pure Rock Fury has been a creeper. I really didn'y like Robot Hive: Exodous when I listened to it for the first time. There is such a definitive line in the sand that they crossed between The Elephant Riders and PRF that I still have not gotten used to it. At least I know at a live show, I'm still likely to hear Shogun Named Marcus and Impetus.

We are listening to the same album, right? I mean, say what you will about repetitiveness and whatnot, but if there's one thing I thought we might all be able to agree on is the fact that it rocks the shit out of anyone with a pair of functional ears.

I have to agree with him, it doesn't rock as hard as some of the others though. It's not a bad album, but I don't see it becoming my favorite of theirs either.
