there are a bunch of different opinions about defining a good show like
"you had to be there"
"but, the setlist!"
"omg Eddie had a boner" (ok i made this one up for the occasional synergy visitor)
personally i don't really care for the MSG shows. i was there in 03 and though the crowd was amazing, the show still was kinda meh. because they played rather sloppy and the set was not something to write home about. same can be said for 98.
anyway, MSG is just an example, if you want to talk about that show in particular please refer to the linked thread.
The crowd is the most important thing. Even the 'greatest hits' set is made better by a great crowd. The next most important is Eddie remembering the lyrics. I think the real reason they like to close with ledbetter is by that time Vedder is so drunk he couldn't sing a real song anyway.

I hate it when people judge by setlist alone.
But the best thing about pearl jam is ....and as much as everyone rips onit...you really have to be there. It does feel like the best show ever when youre there, and thats understandable. cause they are such a great live band.
for me? Just the way the show runs...the way the setlist plays out. I dont care if its all hits or rarities..if the show doesnt flow well..it can bring it down alot. Specifically St. Paul 03....fast song, slow song, fast song slow song. The song flow was terrible. Ed was sick and was probably the reason why but....

You have to be really jaded to be critical of any MSG show particularly the '03 shows. There was nothing sloppy about either night and to suggest otherwise is crazy. I don't know what expectations you have for a Pearl Jam concert because they don't get much better than those 2 shows. Its pointless to debate the greatest show of all time because everybody is going to have their preference. With that being said, those 2 shows are definately in the discussion. The band even realesed night 1 on dvd because it was such an amazing night. Aside from that Showbox dvd, which wasn't released retail, this is the only time the band has realeased a video of one full show. That right there should tell you how the band felt about that night. Then at the end of night 2 the all took a bow because they knew they had just blown the roof off the garden 2 nights is a row. The fact that people are still talking about the '98 and '03 MSG shows all these years later really illustrates how amazing the shows were. I was at all 4 and I know I'll never forget those nights.

B. My feelings for this show have nothing to do with how the band feels about it. I'm not gonna like it just because they do/did.

i asked this in the msg thread, but i didnt get an answer. didnt the band or someone who works with them say they were so happy w/ msg b/c of something with the fan club seats?

I disagree with you on this point. When I saw them at the Spectrum in Philly 03, the crowd was fucking unbelievably loud and the energy was electric, but the greatest hit setlist left a bad taste in my mouth. I enjoyed the show, but a great crowd will never make up for a mediocre setlist in my opinion.

I'm really not. The band could play 30 songs that only come from their 8 studio albums - no rarities or covers - and I'd be fine with that. But they'd have to mix it up.

There's tons of reasons why people talk more about one show than another. And only one of them is that one show might be better than another, which is purely personal taste.

Name other shows that people talk about like MSG. Sodilers Field, Randalls, etc. They are all some of the best shows the band has played. That's the point I'm trying to make. You are right about personal taste and I mentioned in my original post that its pointless to argue about the best show of all time for that reason. But I guarantee in another 10 years people will still be talking about the mgs shows on forums. They were classic shows. The band knows it and 99.9% of the people that were there know it too.

They record video of every show. Believe me, they chose to release this one.

When the tour was announced, these were supposed to be the final two of the tour, so people used their newfound ability to buy multiple fan club seats like crazy, especially for MSG. Then some people were "pissed" (dumbasses, because they'd no longer have the honor of seeing the last show) when more shows were announced, in the US and in Mexico.
So yes, there were a ton of 10C attendees at these shows I think...
