I'm obviously aware of the fact that Avril never really had the "substance" of her music that Nelly did, however I still kind of think she's done a 180 with her new image.
She's got this new song out and I stumbled across the video late last night while channel-surfing. It's complete pop (OK, so was everything else she's done), with a full clapping dance number and everything. However, what got me was the Nelly-like sexification of her video. The short-shorts, mesh stockings, tit shake and multiple close-ups of her waist while she grinds against random people in said stockings.
So, am I alone in thinking this is a continuation of the trend of "strong" women (Nelly, Jewel, etc.) giving into the pop-culture rule of "sex sells" or is just a coincidence? Or does anyone really care?

What is she selling, then? In my opinion it's cool what she does. Making people happy with her music, or sad, depending on what song you choose. When I went to a concert of hers in 2003 the place was full of teenagers with their parents. I think it's a good start in the direction of many other bands. I mean, they also covered Green Day. I think that's pretty cool for a 'pop' band.
groetjes,
Mirella

One pop band covering another is pretty cool indeed.

The bridge sounds and looks like Avril doing her best Toni Basil.
Can't stand the song, but I know this type of music isn't my cup of tea so I generally avoid it. Here, I actively sought it out because of this thread.
Avril seems to be playing it half-Pussycat Doll/half-same old skater kid. To me, she's as disposable as ever. What's interesting is reading the reviews of the single on iTunes and the comments for the video on YouTube, which tend to range from "she used to be so punk and rock so hard, but now she's a total sell-out" to "i'd so like to fuck her". Some have lamented that their anti-Britney has become Britney (in this case, it's more like a third-rate Gwen Stefani).
