I just downloaded 35 Sun Ra albums. This is going to be an epic adventure.

his free jazz stuff is tough on the ears but the majority of his music is incredible. I downloaded 10 more after starting this thread to bring it up to 45 albums.

Hear one album, you hear them all. I don't know if I would even consider Sun free, he's kind of in his own niche, but I don't find it all that deep. To me he seems almost "shticky".

If your into free, theres tons of other, better albums to find. Here is Thurston's top ten free jazz albums.

i'm not really into free jazz. sun ra's freer stuff like heliocentric worlds doesn't appeal to me but i dig his big band stuff and fusion-type stuff.

the common man has no interest in jazz anyway, and this thread was never about recruiting people to that genre of music. i was just excited to have a vast catalogue of interesting music to explore for a while.

To each his own, but I can only take that "man from another planet" shit for so long. It wears thin. I just feel theres better stuff out there that pushes the envelope even further than Sun Ra.

I think free jazz kind of sucks, but saying that I'd rather listen to Dolphy, Taylor, and Shepp than Ra.

Afu is indeed better...
