I'll be there Saturday and Sunday.
AP is one of the coolest guys ever on the golf course and so is Gary Player.
I hope being the honary starter dosen't make AP feel old he can still play really well, the average hack has no idea how hard that course is from the pro tees and he and Jack can still putt better than 80% of the guys in their prime.
I think Tiger and Jack get a bad rap, both are generally pretty nice people as far as my involvement, they are just winners and kind of have to be that way, not to mention if Tiger or Jack were outgoing and personable on the course they'd never get anywhere or get anything done.
This in my opinion is the best golf tournament in the best location ever.

Someone asked Phil for an autograph at one point and he says, "This is not the designated area for autographs." He was walking from the putting green to the clubhouse. He didn't have a club or anything in his hand.
Five minutes later we're watching Fuzzy shoot the shit with guys AND sign autographs WHILE HE IS ON THE PUTTING GREEN PRACTICING.
Another great Fuzzy story. As he's walking up to 12 (the par 3 in Amen's corner, I think it's #12) some guy yells out, "I could hit that Fuzzy!" Fuzzy turns around and says, "Well then why don't you try?!" He pulls the guy from the audience, let's the guys choose a club, gives him his golf glove, and let's some joe schmo have a go at it. This all takes about 10-plus minutes as Zoeller is pretty much part stand-up comedian part golfer, or maybe he's just human. I don't know. Anyway, the guy fucking greens it. Unfuckingbelievable. Fuzzy gives him a ball AND let's the guy keep the golf glove, which he signs for the guy.
Later he lets some little girl take a few puts (on 16, i think). He bullshits with the fans, I mean patrons heh, more than all the other golfers combined. Literally. Golf and all sports need more guys like Fuzzy.
I did see Tiger sign a few autographs on his walk from the clubhouse to the driving range later in the day, but that was it. He was all business.
I should add. I don't get autographs. Not my thing. But, I think it shows a lot of character when guys are willing to take the time to show their fans they care, whether it be a smile, a wave, an autograph, what have you.

This is my favorite golfing event to watch on TV. It's so great when they made the move to broadcast it in HD. Never been, but it looks beautiful on a big TV.

That's a great story, unforgettable. Looks like Jack and Arnie had fun with Kelly Tillman as well one of the better more endearing things about the practice rounds.
The gallery at the masters is seemingly more personable and likeable than at other tournaments, but at the same time I just understand Phil or Tiger or any of the other big names having to stick to the autograph rules. Most people other than children just sell them anyway. Phil has gone out of his way to take pictures and sign autographs for friends of mine who came out to Sugarloaf to see him tee off at 7AM during one BS Classic. He's fan friendly a lot of the time and these guys are preparing to win a major, while Fuzzy is really just out to have fun and enjoy it also there is absolutely nothing wrong with Fried Chicken and Collard Greens, which I freaking love, he totally got screwed by that a few years ago.
I used to love his fishing show. Fuzzy is a great guy.
I wish people on TV could get a sense of the elevation and layout.
From the clubhouse you can see the low middle and high trees as you look down the course an absolutely perfect place for a golf course and the only one I know as well organized to watch golf.

Fuzzy's still probably trying to make up for his "fried chicken and collared greens" comment about what Tiger would have at the day-before meal before a tourney years ago.

I dont even think that was bad, its like him saying an Italian wants lasagna and canolis or a German wants Bratwurst and sourkraut. It's oversensative assholes that assume people are being racist that make it a story. If I want good fried chicken and collared greens (one of my 3 favorite veggies) I go to the black owned "soul food" places. I don't think Fuzzy meant anything by it, and I assume he was busting Tigers balls.

a buddy of mind worked at Isleworth for a season and said Tiger is a cool guy most of the time....which I guess is true for most people.

I wouldn't mess with Tiger during a tournament. I think he could be a pretty cool guy outside of that setting though. It's almost like a character he plays.

This used to be the case for me. I'm really upset with the course changes and the fact that over par won the tournament. This is exactly why I hate the US Open, I don't want to watch the greatest players in the game struggle to make pair- I want to watch them show their skills to make incredible eagles and birdies when they play a great shot or two.
Now if they play a good shot, it's to salvage a par. It shits me that the Masters guys are so anal about one unbelievable week Tiger had in 97 that they have to shut the place down for anyone to get over -10 in future. Tiger proofing is shit in theory anyway, it makes it even harder for the shorter hitters.
I want the Masters back that I fell in love with in the mid 90's. Now I don't even bother to get up, and that really pisses me off because it used to be one of my most beloved sports tournaments in the world.

However, I love that Fuzzy story. It goes along with another story I heard once, think it might've been Bobby Clampett (although I could be very wrong) telling about how he snuck on one afternoon when he was younger in the middle of winter, laid down a hand towel on the green on 12 and stuck one of his balls clean onto it. A hole in one on 12! I loved that tale.
It just seems like magic goes along with that course.

I completely agree. One U.S. Open a year is enough.

Having walked the course all weekend and freezing my ass off I disagree. It's a little long, but it's very very fair and the changes bring the long and short hitters toegther. It forces you to do everything well. The guy that won....did everything well. The score is high soley because the tempertures and winds were absolutely utterly miserable. Nothing was unfair. There is no rough, you can make great shots out of the pillow soft pinestraw. The conditions and the players inability to make putts and accurate shots caused high scores, the course other than maybe a tree or two on the right side at 11 is just right. They made changes to increase competition and bring the field, long and short hitters toegther. Shotmaking is at a premium. Saturday, many many people who laid up at 15 put far far too much backspin on their shots and spun it back in to the water. Cabrera was the only player who truely accurately placed his 2nd shot on the green in the entire field. Also that pin on Sunday was as easy as they could make it and it was simply misplayed by many on Sunday.
Sunday was fantastic television puts simply fell for Zach Johnson that lipped out for everyone else. The wind and cold were the culprit on Saturday, not course changes. Goosen managed to score 70 and 69 everyone else simply did not take what they course was giving them or they got unlucky with wind gusts or they misread putts. It's a major. It's supposed to be hard, but they haven't grown the rough up 6 inches like the US Open. You can still make excellent recovery shots out there even if you blow a drive, if you aren't a good putter though (Sergio) you might as well not even show up in Augusta.
It was warmer and the wind died down greatly on Sunday, that's why the scores came down.
At the US Open they grow the rough tall and really attempt to punish poor shots, they do nothing of the sort at Augusta, and the sunday pin placements were where they always are the poor scores were more about weather than anything else, if it was 75 with light wind this weekend, you would be seeing 9 and 10 under par easily.

Definitely didn't want to see Jesus Freak Johnson win that. Amazing how Jesus always helps the winners. I gotta say, i was pretty bored watching it on Sunday. Usually i'm really into it but i found myself watching the Isles/Devils game a lot more. Tiger didn't deserve to win as he played poorly the whole 4 days. I just didn't feel the excitement for the last 4 holes that i usually do.
