PORTISHEAD-ING BACK!

PORTISHEAD are recording their first album in eight years.

The band have nearly completed their third LP, according to founding member Geoff Barrow.

He said: "We're actually into it as we speak. We took some time off for Christmas, but generally we're doing another record."

Barrow told BBC 6 Music that he was surprised people thought the band had split up, saying: "We've just had our heads down really, we've never actually broken up, or parted, or whatever."

He added: "So for us it just seems, even though we haven't played for years, we still see each other and write - we just haven't released a record for a long time."

As previously reported on NME.COM, Portishead - who won a Mercury Music Prize in 1995 for their debut album ’Dummy’ - will join Massive Attack for a gig at the Bristol Academy (February 19) to raise money for Oxfam’s tsunami appeal.

However, the band are not expected to play any new material at the show, which will feature singer Beth Gibbons playing with an acoustic backing.

Other acts on the bill include The Coral and Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant.

No release date but it's great to hear the real deal from the horse's mouth.

Very, very nice news. It was only a matter of time though, this has gotta be good. Beth Gibbons is one sexy mama.

I found this part quite amusing:

Sounds like they are all totally committed to making things happen, doesn't it?

God, how could people think such things?! Just because they don't record for seven years or have any news cirrculating about them.. doesn't mean they broke up!

Portishead reveal details about third album

First new material in nine years may see light of day

Portishead have revealed details about their third studio album.

Founding member Geoff Barrow has revealed the band have completed their songs for their third album.

It will be the first new material since their second self-titled album from 1997. The bands last release was 'Roseland NYC Live' in 1998.

Posting on the band's Myspace page Barrow wrote: "We've had our meeting with the label it was really positive....which makes the whole thing so much easier to deal with nice people...The tracks are in a right mess but sounding like a album for the first time in years they (are) a bit weird though. Its great its nice to think us old gits have a few tunes in us without sounding like coffee table Zero 7 - Moby - chill out shit!"

Since their last album, singer Beth Gibbons released a solo album, 'Out Of Season', in 2002 with collaborator Rustin' Man.

Portishead Drop Hints, Beef With Moby, Gorillaz

Tricky, Morcheeba, Lamb Feel Left Out

The last time Portishead released a new album was the 1998 live disc PNYC. The last time Portishead released an album of new material was 1997's Portishead. So after nearly a decade, we're pretty desperate for something, anything, resembling news of a forthcoming album.

Well, we got some tiny scraps last week, when the Bristol trio updated its MySpace page with some straight up good news: "weve had our meeting with the label it was really positive...which makes the whole thing so much easier to deal with nice people," the blog said. "the tracks are in a right mess but sounding like a album for the first time in years." The music is described as "fukin a bit weird" before the band takes some potshots at artists with whom they're often RIYL'd. "its nice to think us old gits have a few tunes in us without sounding like coffee table zero 7 - moby - chill out shit!!"

Ooh, diss.

Group member Geoff Barrow launched more zingers on his own MySpace blog on Sunday, when he wrote that the band "should hire ‘dangermouse' he would knock up a portishead album in about a week and the kidz would dig it...it would sell buket loads...get damon alburn to sing on it...WICKED!!!!! DOPE...!!!! fuk em" Gorillaz probably shouldn't start working on a Portishead diss rap just yet, though, as it seems that Barrow was merely using them as a straw man for his frustrations with pop music in general. After all, the post was entitled "the day the music sucked" and he also said "some times i feel like im just fukin usless at this lark there just aint ever gonna be another fukin glory box...thank fuck we did one already"

Thank fuck indeed.

Portishead reveal new album delay

And they have some harsh words for Danger Mouse

Portishead have said they are struggling to make progress on their third album, their first new material for nine years.

The third album will be the first release from the group since 1998's 'Roseland NYC Live', and the official follow up to their 1997 self-titled second studio record.

Founding member Geoff Barrow has posted on the band's Myspace page, explaining that work on the record remains slow.

He said: "Work ain't good at the moment. We've got stuck. Just a few more months and we can really go at it. Working everyday on this fucker. It's really hard not to sound like you're doing a bad impression of yourself.

"We should become a boy band...2 blokes and Beth (Gibbons - Portishead singer), like Steps. Only a few more to go...stay on target...stay on target."

Barrow than goes on to dismiss the suggestion that the band should work with up and coming producers like Gnarls Barkley and Gorillaz member Danger Mouse.

"I'd rather poo in my mum's Sunday roast," he said, "than have Danger Mouse produce a Portishead record. No offence."

Portishead backtrack over Danger Mouse diss
As they continue work on new album

Portishead founder Geoff Barrow has backtracked on the comments he made about Gnarls Barkley and Gorillaz member Danger Mouse.

Eariler this week, Barrow announced on his Myspace page that he'd rather "poo in my mum's Sunday roast than have Danger Mouse produce a Portishead record".

However, in a follow-up yesterday (August 9) Barrow retracted the comments.

He said: "Just to let you know after my rants the other day that were reported about a certain producer. I don't rate myself better or above anyone else.

"It was purely a response to a message that suggested he should produce our album. And to be honest I'm a grumpy old fuck who hates everything, cheers."

The band continue to work on their new album, the follow up to their 1997 self-titled second studio record.

Portishead premiere new songs

It's their first new material for nine years

Portishead have revealed their first new material in nine years.

The two songs - 'Greek Jam' and 'Key Bored 299 03' - have appeared on the band's Myspace page.

The songs are the first new tracks from the band since their self-titled second album was released in 1997.

As previously reported by NME.COM, the band have been hard at work on their third album.

Founding member Geoff Barrows explained in a Myspace post:
"The tracks are in a right mess but sounding like a album for the first time in years they (are) a bit weird though. Its great - its nice to think us old gits have a few tunes in us without sounding like coffee table Zero 7 - Moby - chill out shit!"
